Well that is good to know I guess maybe because I am new I do not know what I am supposed to be looking for Is it supposed to be paper white near the Air cell?

There are 2 membranes inside the shell. The outter one next to the shell should be white & somewhat papery. Turning yellow & getting brittle is a bad sign.
The inner membrane is much thinner, translucent white & contains the veins. As the veins absorb it should get easier to see through & become thinner. This membrane should be somewhat moist. If it turns yellow, getts brittle or dries there is a problem. This is the membrane where shrink wrap happens.

Picture overload of a few that I hatched. They are all the light or dark blue, but one, it's a chipmunk color, still in the bator getting more steady on it's feet. I love the blues. A bundle of blue... Fluffy feet...

Gorgeous! I love blues!! Wow! You're about done there. I think my Marans are going to take their sweet time. Next time I set Marans it'll definitely be dry hatch conditions. It's so fun to see all the fuzzies

Yes, I have one baby left in the bator. Remember, these were very small eggs, some really small. They started yesterday..day 20, and we are finishing up today. I also love blues. I love cochins and silkies. I only have one cochin and one Silkie out there, and they are adorable. I have a Silkie egg in lock down, a separate hatch, hopefully it will hatch tomorrow. Then 4 more from the same gal that sent the last batch..only one hatching. She didn't have to do that, but love it when sellers work with you. I didn't even ask her to do this. So, those Silkies will hatch next month.

THEY HATCHED THEY HATCHED!!! Well one did. One of my silkie chicks hatched and another is hatching as im posting this. Yes. What color is it . The dad is a light splash and mom is a dark partridge both silkies.

what's your humidity? in a still air the temp is different in different areas of the bator....maybe you can find a cooler area....adding a little humidity will help too

It is hovering right around 25-27% most of the time, but have had a few dips (my hygrometer says low of 21% and high of 31%) I am candling tonight so I will add more water and hopefully that will stabilize the temps a little better. (The place where I put my bator isn't where I "wanted" to put it but was concerned that our dog would get to it in any other area and eat all the eggs in there ( She will eat eggs if left on the counter unsupervised for any length of time...grr obviously I didn't do THAT again lol) so this was the next best place...so I'm stuck with location for now
When we finally move to our new place ( idk where/when that is yet lol) it will have a special designated safe place just for hatching eggs! Some people have a sewing room...I'm gonna have a hatching room...My DH is gonna think I'm nuts!

Then again, he probably knows that already!

When you candle, does the shell look odd? I did a quick candle tonight and both eggs I checked looked really porous, little spots all over of bright lighter areas. Is that normal?
Or is it a sign something is wrong?

Can't comment on that-- being new, but I have to shout out that my hatch is taking a toll on me. My kneecaps hurt! Ha! I'm exhausted staying up, and only 1/21 has hatched so far. Phew!!! I wouldn't do it if I didn't love it though I hear a few more chirps and scratching galore from my ameraucanas, but my marans are going to be a few more days...I can tell. Good luck to the rest of ya, and pump up the caffeine!!! P.S. Keep the pics coming :yiipchick

Been lurking here for awhile reading up on everyone's success and issues, this site is a great one stop shop for all things chickens. so I built a coolerbator and decided to give incubating a shot. I put 18 eggs in on Feb. 2 and tomorrow will be lock down. I just candled them for only the second time and so far all looks good. I have only had 1 not take so I disposed of it. I used a egg rack to assist in the turning and have taken them all out of the rack and laid them on a screen covered with a towel. The only issue I have had is with my humidity it has been bouncing around from 50-25, it has been a real challenge to get it regulated.

It has been a really cool experience doing this but I can hardly wait for Sunday. Good luck to everyone with their hatchings.
