Locking down Sunday a barnyard mix I purchased locally and a test hatch on what comes out mixing my EE Roster with Ancona hens ( I have 5 of those eggs)...and then a couple welsummers... 26 eggs going strong

...Dumped a quitter yesterday, looks like it stopped at about the 10th or 11th day

I'm having a better success with my own eggs, I know my two roosters are doing their job...Purchased 36 from the local guy and emailed him to let him know I had to dump almost 1/3 of his on day 7 because they weren't fertile.. But at 5 bucks a dozen I wont complain to much and I wanted to get some new blood into my flock

Nice! I have Polish, White Rock, BA, NHR, BSL from my own flock covered by...I don't really know what he is (a mix of something) and some EEs, RIR, one I was told was a Cochin but didn't look like a Cochin to me...we'll see.Covered by a RIR. These were given to me by a friend

Edited to add: I feel like a new expectant mom! So nervous/excited!

anyone out there know about putting different aged chicks together? I really wanna order another batch of eggs, but just curious as to how I will put everyone together? I have 18 to hatch this wednesday, wanted to order another 12+, but they will be about a month younger than these chicks.... is this ok to do or is it tough to try and get the two batches liking each other?

I finally got some pictures this evening. We counted 8 pullets and 1 roo. Two we didn't get to see, she still has 7 or 8 eggs to hatch. We said no telling what they are going to grow up looking like.

I am going to get a barred rock and breed her with my blue andelusian/blue splash maran! I have seen pics and you get a really nice "blue Barred chicken"!

My experience was with two 1 month + silkies, and I added three 1 day old chicks to the same brooder. (I purchased these chicks a month apart) It seemed that they got along ok, but I would find the chicks with tumor-like bulges on their necks...I was devastated!! Well, a couple days later the bulges would disappear, but the area was wet/draining. This indicated to me that it was some sort of pecking wound, though I never saw the silkies peck them. I didn't figure all this out very well, I assumed they were going to die from cancer or something, lol! All in all, they turned out fine, but there is a definite risk of injury/death. The stronger ones will always show dominance. They all grew up together, and now the babies are much bigger than the silkies. No problem anymore ;)

if you have more of the little guys than the big guys it can be ok. I had 3 chicks that were almost 3 weeks old and had to introduce a new chick because it hatched by its self. they have accepted him okay, he doesn't get tramped or pecked. I am getting younger chicks for him tomorrow, and homefully more hatching sun/mon. I have a heated brooder waiting for the others.
