Jan./Feb. 2014 hatch a long

im sorry to hear your nn didn't make it...do the need to be with others to make it..i only have the one...am very sure I will get him a female this Friday...but do they HAVE to have a mate?

If you are asking if a nn can mate with other breeds the answer is yes. You will get some nn babies & some feathered necks.

If you are asking if a lone chick (only hstcher/survivor) needs a friend then that answer is yes as well. Chicks do better when they are not alone. As long as you have more than 1 chick (any breed) you are fine.

Question: If a chick pips at the correct end, but it is very close to the end, instead of lower nearer to the side, will it have a hard time zipping the shell? Anyone have any experience with this happening?

I've had chicks do this. Typically they will zip down closer to the bottom of the air cell & then begin to zip around the egg once they are at the propper level on the egg.

Ok good to know. I know they have plenty of time still left to zip just didn't know if it was gonna be an issue or not (2 of them have done this so far)
1 of the eggs I'm not sure will end up hatching because the air cell is really small, but we'll see...

about 45 minutes ago i took the eggs off the turner and as i was setting the eggs down in the bator one of the eggs started peeping at me! peeped up a storm while i was finishing putting the other eggs back in. so that one has already internally pipped...little squirt is early but my last batch of seramas hatched early as well

cant wait to see the fuzzbutts!

Wow! impatient little bugger lol Can't wait to see pics!

Update on our hatch: 3 EE and 1 BSL mix hatched out so far...11 have pipped and 8??? Nada yet..

That is great. I am hopeful to have that many, I am curious to see how my Roos' fertility is this early in the Spring/Winter. I am setting 41 next month with all barnyard mixes, my Niece and I are going to collect eggs from her flock and from my flock. Should be eggciting.

Kind of getting old I once again have day 24 eggs that just don't want to hatch only two this time but come on I sure do hope the next batch hatches closer to its due date. I do know both eggs are still viable candled them and float tested them tonight one is kind of strange lots of clear area in pointy end of egg and I can see it moving in that end of the egg but not near the air cell the other egg is a Banty no clear area and can't see movement but movement showed during float test I have 35 eggs due to go into lock down starting today or tomorrow do I just add them to the late eggs already in lockdown? or what?
