Janoel Incubation Experience

I'd also like results of the Spot Check thermometer. The only one I have that is greatly accurate is an expensive one my husband had for hvac work. Its a tiny one on top of a metal spike. I tested it for 32 and 212 and it was perfect. The bad part is that it has an on/off button and will turn off after inactivity, so I don't want to sit it inside and it turn off and be useless. So I occasionally stick it thru a vent hole and check..

I have a gal nearby that has beautiful Lavender Orpingtons. I was planning to get eggs from her the weekend that I picked up my duck eggs, but she got sick and couldn't meet me, so those may be next for me. Beautiful birds!

I compared my spot check with my other ones, to me it seems like it is dead on.

I would love to get some Lavender Orps to put in with my Buffs! they are soo beautiful!

Does your friend ship to Canada?

I am looking into shipping some of my Black Australorps and Buff hatching eggs to the states, but I don't know what it would take. I have a few friends that work in customs, so i'm going to try to get some info.

Thanks I think I'll buy one. I was thinking they were more expensive, but for 19.99, I'm in!

Do you mean ship live birds or eggs? I'll ask her, I need to get in touch with her anyway because I'll be ready for them soon, if that's what I do next.
I personally wouldn't be comfortable with shipping live ones, but if she wont ship eggs, I would consider buying and shipping them to you.

I would be looking for eggs. I am not sure if live chick/birds can be shipped to Canada.

I wanna put my spot check with my others to check it's accuracy but i'm a day away from lock-down and I don't want to disturb my eggs. I candled last night. Out of the 31 I set, 5 were unfertilized and 2 were dead. Lots of movement! My kids are getting excited. (i'll post pics of my home made incubator I built in a couple hours)

I screwed up, I double checked my calender and my lock down isn't for 2 more days. Luckily my wife caught that or I would have been really messing things up.

I will be interested in what you find out about shipping eggs from Canada.

Wow! THat might have been sad. IMagine thinking your eggs were all just not going to hatch?!

I candled last night on day 7 and pulled out 8 eggs, some clears and some early quitters. I'm just going to assume that the 5 Welsummer eggs are all good 'cause I can't see a darn thing inside them. That leaves me 30 eggs.

Still waiting on some phone calls for some answers. I`ll keep ya posted

That`s not to bad, I took out 7 out of 31. 5 clear 2 early retirements. I am on day 17 (I think!) and I got 24 moving and nice air pockets. I had to candle a couple from the point to see anything, and just barely saw movement. Yeah, you would prob need a lighthouse to see into those Welsummers! Hopefully they are all good for ya.

I candeled again last night. I had done so on day 5 in the afternoon. I did last night at day 10 at night. 2 blood rings, and 12 MORE clears. Oh well. The rest looked strong and there were a few iffy ones. that I will look at on day 18. This time I am trying to stay away from candeling every other day. It's hard! I love looking at the movement and the next few days are the best for really seeing beaks and claws.

Sorry to hear about your clears, it's always disappointing.

I know what you mean!! I love candling! I will prob candle one more time tonight before I lock down tomorrow. *fingers crossed*

I have a 3 tier shelf I use for starting my garden seedling on, I built a nice little brooder on it. (it already has 2 light ballasts on it which works out well) Have you heard if aquarium neon light affect chicks negatively at all?

Also, going back to the "spot check" thermometer. I put an Oasis hygro/thermo I just got in with my spot check. Both are reading the exact same temps. So far all 4 of my therms are all within .5 of each other, and the Oasis is sitting within 4% difference than my other hygro's. So I give a thumbs up for the Oasis.
