Janoel Incubation Experience

Her seeing those eggtopsies just blew my my chances.

no no no, I am just kidding!

I'll have to really kiss some butt the next couple of weeks, but it sounds like I just might get my way!
Were both going to do some research before we make any decisions. I have 3 dozen Narraganset turkeys I am picking up from a local breeder when I get back, so we want to concentrate on them first. If that all goes well then we'll move on to the ducks.

Congrats on the hatching! I still cant believe how adorable they are!
I'm afraid if I have ducks like that I am going to snuggle them do death

I am hitting day 21 tomorrow, i'm a little worried. For some reason I had a significant humidity drop while I was gone for a few hours today. I managed to get it back up to 65% and it is holding there. I seriously stared into the incubator blankly for about an hour hoping to at least see 1 egg wiggle, but nothing. I am sooooo tempted to candle 1 egg very quickly just to give my self some kind of hope, but I am fighting the temptation. (it's not easy)

Oh man, you weren't supposed to let her see the eggtopsies! Lol

I don't know anything about Narraganset turkeys. Will have to look them up. This little Slate turkey of mine is something else!

Oh the candling urge... Yes sir. I would say do it, leave them in place and quickly do it, just to set your mind at ease... BUT if you are having humidity issues, you probably better resist. Go to a EAC meeting lol

Keep us posted. Can't wait to see your littles.

Oh and yes, these little guys are so hard not to snuggle to death. If my Pug wasn't so anxious to "taste" one, I'd probably be rotating holding one all evening long!

It is the strangest thing; you make it all the way to lockdown and suddenly this thought occurs,"What if none of them hatch?!"

Last time I was almost in tears believing that I had failed miserably and they were all dead because of me. Just as I was about to pitch over into utter despair I came back and saw a pip!

I am trying hard to stay away from these thoughts as I approach lockdown. What will be will be.

I have had to reduce my temp to 37.3. I have had a couple of times after opening that the temp has spiked. Anyone else had this happen?

Also I have only added 1/8 cup water 3 times during these past 16 days. My weight loss has been on target and air cells look much larger than last time. I am hoping for a better hatch rate as I had 40% drown last time...

I will NOT be opening the bator until day 23 this time. No helping--no matter what. I think this adversely affected the other chicks hatching. Hold me to it! NO MATTER WHAT I SAY!

Even with the pips and movement... I am still reluctant on thinking I did everything right this time. I think it's just the way us "Master Bators" think.

Yeah, I always notice the spike too when opening.. but that tends to settle with in a couple minutes. If I open it more than once, I find I have to sit and fiddle with the thermostat until the air stabilizes again. It takes time for the thermostat to catch up with all the air and humidity movement.

My humidity is sitting at 70% It's a bit high I think.. now I just can't get it down. I don't want to keep opening the bator to release it cause then that just causes instability within the incubator.

Out of 24 eggs, I got 3 pips.. some chirping and I can see some good jumping beans in there!

So im guessing the humidity at 70% must be fine because my pips are rolling around.
I didn't do any weighing this time around.. I will when I do my Turkeys.

Are we going to have to tie your hands behind your back? LOL!

Hopefully I will be posting some pics soon! of CHICKS and not EGGTOPSIES!

OPen all your vent holes. Take out the black plgs?

Probabaly!

Never considered myself a Master Bator before, but since I've had a successful hatch, I guess I am one now!

Just something for you to consider... I came up with a little pipe system to be able to add water from the only vent hole I have, over to the next corner. I took several bendy straws and hooked them together (I cut the bendy section off the inner ones of the chain). When my humidity got too high, I was even able to guide the little bent end down between the grate and used a baby bulb syringe to suck water back out thru the straw. Didn't have to open the lid!

I know, I'm a genius

And my fingers are crossed for you for NO eggtopsies!!

That's a great idea! I use a marinade injector to drip water onto the paper towls I place in the bottom if the humidity starts to drop, but the straw would be nice to use for the reason you stated. Last time I was suddenly at 90%! I freaked and vented a bunch but then the pipping started. I had to stop and wait it out.

...bendy straws on shopping list.

AND GUESS WHAT! My hubby bought me my Silver laced orpington chicks for my birthday!!!! I have wanted them forever. What a sweetheart.
