Janoel Incubation Experience

I saw some Silver Spangled Hamburgs at TSC. I didn't know what they were till now . They are all so sweet, especially the Hamburgs.
Clearly you've never had it rain Hamburgs. They like to hang out on the roof of the barn (two stories) and when they see me come out with goodies they come flying down. Death from above!

Popcorn (chicken), who always looks quite jaunty.

Nugget, who lost most of her color (including leg pigment) when she molted.

Spikey and Nugget, prior to her molt.

Popcorn is beautiful! Is it common for chickens to change color when they molt? None of mine have molted yet. I have a BLRW with almost no blue lacing and wondered if she would get more when she molted. She is my broody.

No, apparently not. Although breeds like the Speckled Sussex acquire more white spots with each molt. Mine haven't had a true molt yet, but did have a partial molt this fall/winter and that's when Nugget lost her spots and leg pigment.

Well I've decided to try a staggered hatch with this next batch. I've already cleaned out the incubator and put 16 eggs in it. I'll add another 16 in two days and then another 16 two days after that, at least so long as the girls keep up their laying. Then I'll add eggs as I pull out any clears and quitters. Or maybe I should stagger them each a week apart?

I'm also not going to use the turner this time. No particular reason, just felt like giving it a try.

All of the pictures are so pretty! I love the old flooring next to the chicks. So artsy!!!!!!

I would try more than 2 days apart unless you have a ton of incubators for hatching. If you did hatches a week a part you would only need 1 for incubating and one for hatching. That would give you time for lockdown with high humidity, hatching and clean up. That is where I am at. Are you going to hand turn?

What does everyone use for sterilizing their bators? I feel like I need to use something more heavy duty next time. I really cleaned the heck out of it last time, BUT it still has a lingering odor?

Such beautiful babies!!

I clean mine in my laundry sink first with just some bleach spray and a brush. Then rinse it off. Then before I started it again, I wiped it down with Clorox wipes.
That's what my sister in law said she did, so that's what I did. I'm only on my 3rd batch in it, but I've never had any odor. The ducks stunk it up pretty good while they were in there, but it went away quickly.

I believe I saw a thread about sanitation. I probably need to read it lol

Such amazing pics!

Looks like I have some catching up to do on this thread

I have been out of commission for almost a week now. Had a major stomach bug that really did a number on me.

Sorry to hear that. Feel better! You definitely got some catchin up to do. Alot happens in a week around here lol!

Hope you feel better Wildfire!

Today I went out to check on my momma hen and chicks. I was pleased to see them all cheeping around. Then I moved her to find 2 dead chicks. These were older ones. They look like the smothered last night while she hatched out 2 more. Sad. SO 12 in all. I have a light in there and the 4 I care teh most about are choosing to be under the light instead of her and I am happy.

Anyone ever had this happen?
