JANUARY 2015 Hatch-A-Long

Weighed my eggs this morning but I guess I'll have to wait till tonight to see if I have to toss any... might make my weight results more understandable.

I have 10 that lost but not quite enough, 14 that lost the correct amount and 4 that lost too much. So I have no idea whether to adjust humidity based on those results.

And I couldn't help but take peek into a few more. I just had to know all my chicks didn't get killed by the heat spike. I looked in 4 this morning. 1 looked clear, another looked like it had a mass in it but I didn't see veins or movement, 1 was a green egg and hard to see in but I think it may be clear and the last had a baby chick, it didn't move at first so I waited and waited because I wanted to know for sure it was alive and it moved! Yay, so for sure I still have 2 alive counting the one I saw yesterday. So long as I have some that survive I will be happy. Anyway, we will candle them all tonight and then I'll take a look at my weights again minus the ones I toss.

Question... should I toss clears or give them some more time? Maybe till day 10 then check again or does it hurt to keep them in till day 14 or lockdown? Also what about the ones I can't tell, do I just keep them until I can see something very apparent telling me to toss them like a blood ring?

If they're clear they can stay in however long you desire provided there's no dark spots or murkiness. Usually at Day 14 you know for sure. Those clears just have a certain "glow" about them compared to live eggs. I've had a few that I pulled at Day 17 that I didn't know for sure (thick colored shells) and, yep, clear. No harm, no foul...or fowl.

Remember to pull the ones that smell or that weep. Those are your potential bacteria bombs.

I keep them all til day 14...questionables go on day 18. Unless there is an egg threat! Some are just so hard to see!

I am so happy you saw life!!! Now you can try and relax and recover from your surgery!!!

thanks for the info! Yes there will be plenty of resting and drinking tons of water the next few days.

Beautiful!!! I can't wait to see the pics! You are a lucky lady! How do you like serama's? I see a lot of people hatching them in the hatch a long!

Seramas are great! They are super easy to raise even though they can be tricky to hatch. We are on our third generation of working on frizzled exchequecher and one of our young pullets is STUNNING!!

I'm officially locked down! Now, I just have to wait for the day after tomorrow :(
I think I've lost one of my Silkie eggs, but I'm not sure, so I left it. Its completely dark inside like it should be, but there weren't any veins near the air cell. Everyone else looked good though. 10 shipped EE eggs and 5 (one being questionable) Silkie eggs due to hatch on the 13th. Ugh, the waiting!

Oh, and my saddle shaped air cells have fixed themselves, is that normal? The last time I candled, the were pretty wonky. Last night when I checked them, they were all perfectly round...

Best of luck on your lockdown! Can't wait to see your pics! Not sure on the saddle shape...I had them before with shipped eggs...never noticed if they changed!
