JANUARY 2015 Hatch-A-Long

I am with you...let those babies have some nice fresh air~ They will love it.

On a sidebar, I should have taken a picture of my EE rooster yesterday. I always open their outside hutch to the run and they stay inside. Who can blame them...it's 9 degrees. So, I go to get my tractor and start moving the snow drifts and i see the rooster in the run standing on top the snow bank. He didn't move...so, about 20 minutes later I walk in and lift him from the bank. I think he was scared of the snow and just froze not knowing what to do. Hysterical.

Found the crower too~ My sweet little yellow chick from my December HAL.  I think I am going to have a lot of roosters on patrol here!
Too funny Purpletie3, I had the exact same thing happen with one of my EE hens. She thought she was going to be smart and bypass having to step in the snow. So what does that silly girl do, She's on the pop door landing, she takes off flying as far as she can and then PLOP she's in the snow bank. I laughed so hard I about wet myself. She wouldn't move, I went about my chores thinking she would eventually figure that she was going to have to walk out of there. Oh no she wasnt, she stood as still as a statue and I finally gave in and rescued her. She never did that exit out of the pop door again, lol.

we haven't. I guess we probably should, it'll get them out of that box for a bit!
Here is a couple pictures I took this afternoon of a couple of my 6 week olds venturing outside for the first time. I was changing out bedding so I had the coop door wide open. Many went over to the door, but a couple thought they would check it out.

And here is a picture of 6 wk olds enjoying the dust bathing pan. Did someone say Chicken Dinner anyone?

LOL...

Well it's been a sad afternoon for me! We had some casualties... well more like 13 out of my 18 babies. My neighbor moved them all into a bigger brooder yesterday, it was too big for her kitchen so she put it on her back porch. She had the lid closed and the heat lamp on at night since the nights are still chilly. This morning she checked on them and they were fine. Her daughter went to check on them before lunch to find them all either lethargic or dead due to it warming up and the heat lamp on and lid closed. We determined that 6 were alive but we had to give them all water and some Pedialyte with a syringe. The 6th one ended up not making it.

So I have 3 black ones, 1 chipmunk and one white one left. I'm Sooo sad! My favorite little black one with the brown face and black and white striped wings was one that didn't make it and my other 2 polish/silkies didn't make it. I really want to cry. It's one thing to lose them for reasons out of your control but another when it could have been prevented!

Sad, sad day! :(

thanks. I am so very sad. I'm just trying to look on the bright side that at least we still have 5. But I'm really bummed and a lot of the ones I liked are gone. We had like 6 Sicilian buttercups and only 1 made it! :/

Going to get the 2nd coop done as quick as I can now so they can come back and live at my house again. No offense to my neighbor, I love her and I know she did what she thought they needed. :/ she feels horrible about it.

I just hope the 5 left aren't all roos! :/

That really sucks that she cooked the babies. That's why I bought that brinsea ecobrooder because I think I cooked my first chick with that heat lamp too... :(

You know this means you need to get hatching again!

I am Sorry Renee that this happen. Once the "Milk" is spilt or the Jar is broken---there is nothing you can do but Learn and Go Forward. For about $10 and a few minutes, the heat light thing would not have happened. I am Glad you are looking on the Bright side!!

That is terribly sad! I'm so sorry! I cry for days when I lose one chick. So sorry. Many hugs! Many hugs for your neighbor, too.

Good luck with the remaining 5 Renee. Do you have access to more Sicilian Buttercup eggs to incubate? I have one, a roo and he is currently ill, but he has been such a nice roo.I would like more Buttercups.
