There should be 19 in there (two under my arm). 5 faverolles, one grey araucana and the rest are sussex. 2 more is in the hatcher, and 3 un-pipped eggs that I think are dead.

Now comes the task of imprinting and taming these fluffballs. The first hatchling think I'm his mommy, and the others are very calm.

I've had that happen with local eggs I picked up. So to me, in my opinion, if it is not from your farm / pen, it is a crapshoot

There's so much you know about other people's eggs. How are the eggs been layed, handled and stored? How are the hens fed? How much calcium in their diet? Are there any hereditary conditions? How well do their roosters perform? All variables you can investigate and change in your own flock.

On the other hand, buying eggs are the easiest way, for me at least, to obtain new bloodlines. Getting live animals would require driving long ways to get them and eventually would cost the same per bird as a 50% shipped egg batch.
(I prefer buying live ducks though, shipped duck eggs are a nightmare.)

I taught the guy I gave my roosters to on how to store fertile eggs. I see this turning into a good relationship. I'll give him chickens as long as he gives me eggs at a good price. I'm sure he will be very talkative when we meet up with him. He is amazed that I hatch my own chicks.

I have to start up the bator today so that it's ready for Monday.

Yay! Congrats on such a great hatch!!!!

I just picked up 7 eggs today on “impulse” :gig

I will be setting them tomorrow morning, so they should hatch around January 26. I just had a really poor hatch (2/15) from long distance shipped eggs so I’m hoping for better results this time.

They are Black Copper Marans from a local breeder.
