Jersey Giants thread for pictures and discussion

I find my Jerseys to be of good temperament. It depends a lot on how they were raised; i.e., if you get chicks & spend lots of time handling them as young 'uns, they typically end up as trusting & well-adjusted adults. I admit that I don't have a ton of time to spend with my flocks, but I do try to hand feed them & get them used to being handled early. I've never had a "problem" rooster in the Jersey breed.

I need to get a better pic... This is Andre. That is a Table behind him and this was from last year, he is bigger now. Most people that see him think he is a turkey, LOL
He is very sweet natured and calm. Even my little Serama roos would boss him around.

Andre the Giant, hea? Lovely picture! I am going to plan to take new pictures tomorrow. Let's see ... my first batch of 13 were hatched Sept 21, 2009 ... so they are nearly 16 weeks old now. If it isn't still freezing tomorrow ... I will get photos.

Geez with the wind chill, it is -20 tonight! That is twenty below zero! Crazy cold! Though, I heard it is -56 (wind chill) in North or South Dakota. That is just plain dangerous, for human as well as fowl!

I have white jersey giants. Ended up with 2 roos and 1 hen. Cannot find anyone with white giants, everyone has blue or black. Would love to find some pullets or grown hens, but seems everyone but me prefers black. Mine are 9 months old, my hen has yet to lay an egg. My roos are huge and still growing. They are the sweetest boys. I let them free range in the evenings when I get home and only have to clap my hands and they come running back into the pen. They are my husbands favorites. He would have all roosters if possible, he just loves the big guys!

I guess I am finding out if the Giants are winter hardy! ha

Brrrr, it is frightfully cold here. I still need to get updated photos ..

It's winter here in MISSOURI

And the gentle breezes blow
Seventy miles an hour
At thirty-five below.

Oh, how I love MISSOURI

When the snow's up to your butt
You take a breath of winter
And your nose gets frozen shut.

Yes, the weather here is wonderful
So I guess I'll hang around
I could never leave MISSOURI

I'm frozen to the ground!

I would really like to breed Jersey Giants to conform to the Standard of Perfection (SOP) and have a really nice flock. As mine are still just growing out, I am waiting to identify their faults. However, I can already see some that will be culls.

Wynette, of all the pictures I have seen ... yours look the best to me! I hope you will share your knowlege on the breed.
