Jersey Giants thread for pictures and discussion

I see under, "DISQUALIFICATIONS," it says,
Bottoms of feet showing complete absence of yellow.

In addition to that, under the BLACK Jersey Giants, it says ..
More than one-half inch of positive white showing on the surface, or two or more feathers tipped or edged with positive white.

So, all Jersey Giants should have yellow on the bottom of their feet. I think I have heard that before! What is positive white? I thought white is white ...

Yeah, white is white, right? HA! Positive white is a section that doesn't have splashing (if I recall correctly).

Okay, now I have to go check feet!

Hey Kathy,
We all can learn from each other and thats what this group is about. I learn something new everyday about my birds and breeding program. I have only been raising Jerseys for 4 years. Working together we all can help each other improve our breed.

Donald,
So you have been breeding them for years? Have you always been a serious breeder or a hobbyiest? I mean, how long have you worked toward the SOP? Can you tell me what the hardest part is? What traits are you finding in the Hall line that need work? It seems to me (newbie) that mine have some serious faults. What do you cull for, first?

I am trying to pick your brain here! Tell me everything! LOL

Kathy,
I have only had Jerseys for 4 years and just started really trying to make them better the last 2 years. My first Jerseys just came from all over the U.S. with different peoples eggs and I started culling from there. I'm no expert on Jerseys. I just think its one of the best breeds out there. I always breed for type first and color second. Then when you get your type you can take them birds and really make your color better. I like a well built bird. Broad chest, stout legs, broad head, horizontal back that tapers to a well spread tail and like you said before I like to see yellow on the bottom of the feet. NO purple sheen in the black birds, even lacing on your blue birds. I'm still not 100% happy with my birds but it gives me something to work for. Let me know if you are interested in some black females because I will have some nice ones to let go of. I have way to many.

Oh, I have a question ... my Giants are still just growing out, and are in with other breeds currently. BUT, in a month or so I will put them in their own area. My question is ... because of their large size, do you put their roosts lower than the other breeds? Presently, my roosts are 4 foot up from the floor, with a droppings board a foot lower. Would that be too high for these heavy birds?

Kathy, my roosts for my Jerseys are only about 2' from the floor - and, my coop has a 2nd level, where the roost is only about 8" off the floor, so they often jump to the 2nd level, and then onto the roost. I think 4' would most definitely be too high. Great forethougth on your part!
