Jersey Giants thread for pictures and discussion

My guess is that they will. Since yours are from my stock, and I get good sized eggs, you likely will, too. One of these days, when it warms up, I hope you post some pictures. I would love to see how they are turning out.

Hi....that is really sad and upsetting. I have only had one hen ...a blue cochin...who went broody and when moved to a isolated area...sat on the eggs I put under her...and hatched! She was a wonderful mama and the whole event (my first for natural hatching) was just fantastic. I have a friend that bought her last year when I had to sell my flock. My question for anyone out there really...is how often Blue Jersey Giants go broody. I read that they were suppose to be inclined to "broodiness" but were not good to have set on the eggs because they were too heavy and would crack them. So far...you are the only one who mentioned you had a broody Jersey Giant and your outcome was not what I wanted to hear! Can I hear some good stories about broodiness and hatching?? I have ordered some orpingtons that I figure can be substitute mamas if necessary.

I just had my blue Jersey giant go broody for the 3rd time she is 18 mos. old so I finally let her set on 2 eggs 1 hatched and she is a great mom I will get a picture up as soon as I remember how.

I have a Blue JG that was broody 3 times in 2010. First time she hatched 9. The other times I broke her because I wanted her to lay eggs. This coming year, I'll let her brood all she wants. She was a great Mom.
For me personally, separating broodies from the flock works best. But, that means that the chicks don't get introduced to the flock until they are 5 months or older.

Well from what I've read....the Jersey giants are slow to mature period. However....there must be a difference in the genetic line from from your info. I don't mind if they take longer to mature as long as they turn out healthy , look good and have pleasant dispositions.
