Jersey Giants thread for pictures and discussion

Chics in sun...Gibbs High! Small world, huh?
I have read of several others that are from Florida that raise Jersey Giants...so they should be ok. We moved to N. Michigan in 2003 after living in Florida for 30 yrs. Love it but winters are a smack in the face and hubby still talks about moving back! (so I do pay attention to people raising Jersey's in Florida)
Good luck on your hatch and also on retaining your job! My school hired my intern when I retired...they closed my school within 2 yrs....she went to Gulf Beaches Elem....they closed that school...she is now at the very first school I taught at Madeira Bch Elementary...but now I think it is a alternative school! Save this thread so we can compare "candling" this weekend!

Hello Jersey Giant peoples!

I'm trying to identify a mystery chick we "rescued" out of an assorted pullet bin. (She didn't need rescuing, but was oh-so-cute, and the boyfriend didn't even try to talk me out of it!)

She's all black on her feet, comb, beak, feathers, even her cute little eyes seem black. I've heard about black combs maturing into red, but for now hers is still black.

These pictures, she's about 2 weeks old. She does have a little bit of greyish feathers on her underside, if you can tell.

This pictures she is almost 3.5 weeks old.

And here she is today around 5 weeks old.

So she's black, with some coppery/brown feathers coming in as well. Could she possibly be a Jersey Giant?

Edited for embarrassingly spelling "beak" wrong...

Hello just though I would mention I am down in Homestead Fl, I would say extra on the hot and humidity. My Giants do fine, they have shade in the goat barns and some bushes. I kept a close eye on the lg blk roos first couple of summer but they did not seem any hotter than any other chicken in the yard during the dog days of summer. Just my experience

Velvet hairpiece...possibly a Buckeye?

I just want to share that I candled my 27 BBS Jersey eggs this morning and out of 27 I only eliminated 3! I do have two more I'm uncertain of but I'm feeling good about this hatch!! I have 14 now from Wynette (thank you thank you) and 10 of Maria Hall's.

Thank you pride and joy! I was actually going to bid on some of your eggs when I was looking for these, but then the auction was not listed any more - you have beautiful birds. I'm happy to know you don't do anything 'extra' to keep them cool.

theoldchick - that's too funny - what a small world.

fifelakelooper - Yeah!!
