Tell him (and the hen!) congratulations for me!!

My hen is grumpy pretty much 24/7. She attacks the other hens, she's camera shy, fights with my OEG rooster, fights with the hens' next door to her at shows, she broke 2 wing feathers on the way to a poultry show, and hogs the food bowl.

(She's the hen in my avatar...) Your son's hens look laid back in the pictures!

I took lots of photos of the Giants at the show ....You will have to forgive me for not taking a photo of the (1) white rock that beat us!

I remember getting eggs from a so-called "breeder" and when I got them, all but 3 were not poopy. 2 were cracked. And the rest we cleaned with a damp towel. Not one hatched. In fact one "exploded" under the broody....

With chicks or eggs we really need to state "Exhibition-bred" or "Exhibition Style" verses Production-bred or Layer Style. And, sorry to be such a poop-head but a lack of bone mass, shallow depth and narrow breadth of headpiece, pink feet, etc will never make a "Show Quality" bird in a breed touted to be a Jersey Giant even if you had a blue ribbon grandfather-bird once in your flock! There is nothing wrong with having birds of Jersey background that are excellent flock birds and wonderful layers and really nice for the urban backyard trio of pet girls. I sell many, many of those and they are wonderful 'chickens' with a purpose. The few, out of those many, that I may keep or place in a 'breeding for Jerseys' home needs to have the traits that define the breed. Rant done.

Must sell or butcher-out a few more because the farm that sold them promoted them as "Show Quality" and none of the chicks sent even remotely look like a GOOD Jersey chick --think crow-head, orpington feet, shallow bodied, etc. (But I had promised to 'share' in the expense with a friend to get chicks. When I saw what was sent, I bought the least I could without causing a fuss over how I thought she was duped) That is one reason I like ordering/sharing eggs. As long as someone doesn't pick through the eggs for only those from their Lesser hens you have a good chance of hatching what the breeder her/himself would hatch -- from bottom to top pick as you choose -- not just the bottom ones put in the shipping box! Been there. Had done that.

I am just curious Wynette, How many Giants do you hatch out a year for your own use? Before Culling that is?

This year, I hatched out less than 30, which was a mistake. I ended up keeping just one cockerel, and he sprouted a side sprig, so he's now in the freezer. Sigh. Please don't misunderstand - just because I didn't save any but one sure doens't mean this line isn't a good one. I REALLY love this line and will continue working it. Will be hatching many, many more in '13.

I had to get rid of my BJG rooster!
He's too MEAN to us and my dogs.
Gosh.. He's only 7 months old and VERY mean.
We didnt like him anymore. so i trading him for a Bantam rooster.
I do love him and wouldnt mind to keep him in pen. but I rather to get rid of him before its get worse.

I'm sorry to hear this; I have personally never had a nasty Giant male from any of the lines I've run. What a shame!

Goodness, I HATE sending eggs with even a smidgen of dirt or fecal matter on them. It's difficult to have 100% clean eggs, for sure, but they sure shouldn't be what I would call "dirty." Sorry you had such a bad experience with them!

My "kids" from your hatch are coming along very nicely. Out of the six hatched I have five and will probably cull down to the best cockerel and best blue pullet (I don't usually keep black pullets from B/B/S breedings only from the black pure breeding that have no blue crosses). I would love to have a really outstanding Splash cock-bird to put over a few of the better black-bred blacks.....

My best blue boy from this year has a head the size of a fist and 13lbs at 7-8 mos, legs like trunks and straight, etc. Entered him in a show and a week later thru a sprig so had to grab a lesser boy to take,,, Uuuggghhhh

When someone says I have never had "that" I smile and think "Just give them time or better observation"! =:~)

Sprig is subject to show up on any breed of chicken regardless of who owns them. The sprig is a point sticking out from the Comb. There is a picture in the SOP showing a double sprig. Most of these Dqs and Faults will be in the first 40 pages of the SOP. Some judge will run their finger nail along the comb to make sure there is not one. I am sure Wynette will be along tomorrow. The sprig can also be on a rosecomb bird.

Ah, ok, I think I get it. I was thinking sprig was the same thing as side sprigs, but of the few birds I've had with them, they had them as chicks and as they grew up, they just got worse. Not that I really ever paid much attention to these details since... well I have a production flock for the most part. Thanks!

the few that I have had were late as the testosterone really kicks in as they are quite small ones and maybe not noticed if not pointed (no pun intended) out to you. I have seen birds win a breed and then DQ'd the next show for small side sprig (not in the JG's yet) just because it came in late and small. When you are breeding for assets and against the obvious DQ's they still show up occasionally but are usually less apparent or minimized.

I have 4 very nice looking cockerels I kept.
3 blues diff shades and a huge blk.
The pullets are both colors.
8 pullets is all I have left so I really need to get more.
So I can cull down to the best fitting the sop.
Way to go on the wins and nice pictures!
As always jg people are such helpful people and always willing to explain and jump right into helping others!
That is another reason I love the breed!
Most of the breeders/handlers/ owners are out going and not so up tight.
Wynette just to put it out there I love this line too!
They are such nice fully body birds and fit the giant part better too.
I know of what I have left of them I'm very happy to the point any culls from this line will go into the oe or egg pens.
I just hope I can hold up my end and do right by them.
