Joining the Chicken Trend here in Texas!

e:celebrate

Glad you're here Jessica!

If you haven't yet, please make your poultry a FIRST AID KIT for any issues that would arise.
It's definitely better to have it and not need it rather than need it and not have it.

Also, make sure your coop(s) have a proper amount of VENTILATION. Your chickens will absolutely thank you for it! :D

Oh, and keep an eye out for @21hens-incharge. She has perfected chicken math to where, you could have 50 chickens in your yard, and she can show you how, mathematically, you actually have NEGATIVE 309 chicken so you'll need moar chickens! :gig[
My radar went off!! Someone said chicken math!!
:lau

OK so math 101
Any rooster cannot count since they don't lay eggs.
Any broody cannot count since broody means not laying
Any chick cannot count since they obviously aren't laying eggs
Again chicks don't count since they could be males and males don't lay eggs

So you THINK you have 13 chickens?

If you have a broody that makes 12
12 chickens - 8 eggs (potential chicks) can't count those because ... Well counting chickens before their hatched and all = 4chickens

Wait you have a broody on eggs?
You have a rooster (assumed quotient)
4chickens -1Rooster = 3chickens

3 chickens hmmmm any bantams?
You mentioned a cochin. Is she a bantam? If so subtract 2 more leaving you with 1 chicken. Chickens are flock animals. Oh NO you only have 1 she needs friends!!

Bantams don't count and are actually a minus 2 each due to tiny eggs and broody tendencies.

I know you really nnneeeeddd more chickens. ;)

Seriously :welcome it is a great group of friendly folks ready to help when needed, cheer when things are great and be supportive when the chips are down.

Oh this is greatness! LOL!!
I am actually trying to find out if 2 of my brahmas are bantams! But my cochin most certainly is!
I have 4 australorps (1 roo and 3 hens), 1 buff brahma roo and 1 buff brahma hen, 1 gold laced cochin hen, 1 Dominique roo and 1 Dominique hen and 4 mixed breeds that I have no idea what they could possibly be but were given to my daughter. Excluding eggs. So right now, I have lots of chickens and needs more space to get more! We have plans in the works to build a huge complex.

You guys have been great so far and very welcoming! Even before being a member your forums were a great help!

Well what if I have 6 hens, none are broody and only 2 are known layers. By spring they will all be laying and that’s the time I’d want to get the chicks so how do you make it so I can press the argument for more chickens?

Are you wanting a good argument for more chickens to present to a spouse or SI?

LOL....you can do what I did!

Just show up with more!!

Sadly it’s a bit harder than that, I’m trying to convince my parents, working on mom with the egg reasoning but I’d like some chicken math to back it up. C’monhelp me out @21hens-incharge
