July 2015 Hatch A Long HAL

Today is day 6 and I couldn't wait to candle so I did. Out of 6 Easter egger eggs 5 have major veins showing and 1 looks like a detached yoke with nothing going on. I will wait to see tho so this is my first time incubating and don't really know what I'm doing lol. So excited!!

Lol I don't know what I'm doing either! :D *hangs on by the seat of my pants alongside you*

Day 18 for my marans, locked down 13. All look great development except for the one that the air cell was placed down for the 1st 7 days then corrected, the growth looks retarded and weird. May lose this one.

I'm done for this week. 53 out of 77. Did eggtopsy on the 24 unhatched to see if it was on my end and they turned out to be infertile. I think it's because my current flock is 2 years old.

This morning there were several newly hatched chicks under my broody Isbar. The Brahma chick hatched, an Isbar, and 4 Hedemora. Two eggs left under her. She did an awesome job setting for a first timer. I have a video, but don't have a place to upload it. Pics tomorrow of them!

These are the Hedemora my incubator hatched:

I'm improving my candling and beginning to understand what I am seeing. I have 45 eggs set and they are on Day 7/8. I saw body, veins, air pocket, and movement on 27 eggs. I saw body, air pocket and movement on 12 (These are all dark brown shells so too dark to see veins). 3 are questionable (one is too dark but has an air pocket, one has air pocket and veins but no noticeable body, and one has body, veins, air pocket and movement, but the air pocket is on the side of the egg). 3 have no noticeable body, veins, or movement. It just looks like a yolk blob in there. I've left all of them in the bator, but I'm watching the problematic ones closely.
I'm going to try not to candle again until Sunday. Ha! I don't know the typical hatch rate once they get through the first week, but 39 good looking eggs is more than I expected at this point.

I could just kick myself. So I had 2 incubators going. They were a few days a part on setting. So I candled my eggs..90+ and thought that I had a lot of eggs not developed. So I take my eggs out that looked bad when candled and start to open them to see what I could see. Egg#1 chick on day 14. Crap! Think about my eggs and think well I I didn't see any movement in this egg and open egg #2. Baby on day 10. Well I feel like crap now even more than before. So I candle the next egg... It was rotten.. I bring the eggs back in and candle them all... Again? This time I have my daughter look at them. We decided that if there are any veins.. We keep them. We did see many eggs that were still clear. Since she is in FFA and had to do some work on poultry she said that several of the chickens that laid the eggs really needed to be fed oyster shells. Some shells were really weak. Even though I don't sell my eggs to others to hatch I do check mine by candling them to see how the shells are. There is a difference. I'm not sure if anyone else does this or not. So now I have one incubator with 40+ eggs. So we will see what we come up with for my 2 hatch dates.
