July 29th Hatch along..anyone due for a hatch around then?

We are going into lockdown tomorrow with a batch of marans eggs I had saved for a friend and he didn't come for them. Some were a bit old so it will be an experiment in many ways!
I am leaving them in the LG to hatch. Taking them out of the turner tomorrow and putting them in cut out egg flats. Haven't done the carton hatch before so I am eager to see how that works.
Fan in the LG stopped working so it's been still air. Temp OUTSIDE is now 105- hottest ever recorded in our area. Bator is on our enclosed porch and is hanging at 100-101.
Haven't candled at all except for a single Orp egg a week ago. That was growing. I always put a couple orpington eggs in to satisfy my curiosity because I never candle the marans until lockdown.
With the heat and humidity, my usual dry incubation is impossible and humidity has ranged from 35-45%. I have problems with the marans getting to lockdown and not hatching. We shall see what nature provides!

Good luck! Those Maran eggs are hard to see through anyway. I've thought about doing the egg carton too, so, will have to see how yours goes.

Can someone help me out with the terminology please! What do you mean by lock down? Is there something special I need to do?

If you are hatching chicks, you will stop turning your eggs on day 18. That would be, the 18th day after you set them. Don't count the first day they went into the incubator. They shouldn't be turned from that day on. The humidity should go up from where you've had it. I like mine at or around 57. Some may think that is too low, but I do more of a dry incubation period where I don't have my humidity up over 40 while I incubate. It is usually around the high 20's, or low 30's. Let's the egg lose the moisture inside. And, you do not open the bator..at all, until the chicks have hatched..don't want to lose humidity.
Anyway, lockdown, fun time. Don't have to worry about the turning..If you have your eggs in a turner..take them out, set them on their side, or some folks like to put them in egg cartons..haven't tried that myself.
Will go and see if I can find a link that talks about this..hope I find a good one.

Then I'll have some barn yard surprises...and this guy threw in a couple of turykey eggs..never have seen turkey eggs before.

The two are very fertile.. what to do with them...I won't be keeping them. Guess I will sell them for a good, small price.

Thanks so much for the information. This is my second hatch. I think that I made the mistake of counting my days incorrectly last time. I felt so bad when the little guys didn't make it!

I will do much better this time around.

I did have one chick that hatched a day later than the others and was very wet. He when he dried it seemed like maybe yolk may have dried to him. I didn't think this was possible, but...I just don't know. Any suggestions on how to avoid the same thing this time around?

My two buff oprington and 4 EE eggs are due on the 28th so exited the chicks are all moving about there eggs hoping for a 100% hatch !! Good luck to all of you expecting babies

I candled today and will toss half the eggs. It looks like some development started but there were early fatalities. I don't know if it was because of the location of the incubator or what

I'm also not happy with the size of the air spaces, but considering the heat and humidity in the state, there is not much I can do about it. Proportionately more of my blue eggs seem ok, so we shall see what, if any, hatch. Blue eggs are the worst for candling and I just go by them being either totally dark with a barely visible air cell, or not totally dark.

On the brighter side, I have to call the processor and arrange for 5 early roos' dinner camp. They are getting too randy despite the heat!

Some do take a day longer for some reason...could be many different reasons. And, the wet could be for different reasons, one being that the moisture didn't get evaporated in the early stages of incubation. If that's the reason, then you are lucky to have a live chick. Sometimes if it is too wet in there, they can drown when they break through the membrane. Too much moisture left in the egg, they pip the membrane, just to drown in the watery gooey "stuff." I could be wrong...if any one else has any other reason as to why the chick was wet, let us know! Sometimes too, mine are, well, just extra wet.
