July Hatch-a-Long (including 4th of July hatch-a-long)

My broody ducks continue to eat their eggs. My last few hatches of their eggs they all hatched and I know they were good at around day 10. I am really a bit disturbed at their incubation practices. Probably down to 6 or 7 eggs with a week to go.

My sweet broody wyandotte is still sitting on no eggs in her rollaway box. She hangs onto them a little bit and then they eventually slip back. She's very good about letting me reach under her to check what she's got. Everyone is giving her their eggs which then roll away, but she is still sitting after 2 weeks and I think I'm going to set her up in a brooder with some of the langshan eggs that are in the bator.

My muscovy eggs were infertile so I am thinking about giving her some of the eggs I have in the bator. I will wait until they are more developed though

No one WANTS to!!! Hahaha!! It's a total pain! Makes a nice fence though if it's stretched out properly.

Pretty sure quite a number of our posts aren't up to stretching even if we tried. We're just wire-tying/stapling while pulling as hard as we can. The ground goes up and down so much, I'm not sure too much stretching would even be helpful for us. Fortunately the field fence will shift a bit for those dips and high places. I'm just glad you can barely see it unless you're close.

We have some that are that way too... nothing to be done about it for how the ground changes. The main thing is that they serve their purpose.

Candle report for day 13, 61 eggs checked. Two removed, one had a wide blood ring and the other was probably clear that I had missed.

Odd thing I did not on the first candle and didn't report, one of the embryo is growing up by the air sack. It is smaller than the others and I thought it was dead on day 10, but on day 13 it is bigger than before. Anyone ever see such a thing? With a vertical turner, all the other chicks are chilling in the point of the egg.

Yes, I've seen that. As I recall, it didn't turn out to be a problem.

If you know @duluthralphie , you know he's not a fan of waterfowl. At ALL. Well someone gave him some eggs and they were developing like I understand from your description. Everybody was telling him that meant they were duck eggs. I didn't know whether they were playing him or whether it was true. They turned out to be nice, decent chickens after all. So when I had some eggs growing like that, I remembered and had a laugh. They turned out baby chicks too.

It would have been quite a wonder if they had not, since I only had four little drakes, and the goose eggs are pretty hard to mistake.

To celebrate 3 years since my first hatch I decided to do one more hatch for the year. I just can't help myself. I'll save the surprise of what eggs I've ordered until they've arrived but I'm super excited.

Here's a pic of my Feb Hatchalong pullets. They should start laying next month! Watching them scratch around in the yard makes me smile everyday.

That's a bummer! I was looking at muscovy the other day but didn't take the plunge. I'm not sure I want that much work.
