My dad and I sometimes used to crow at the cockerelsPlease excuse me if I'm posting this in the wrong thread but I have to share it with you guys. I have officially turned the corner of madness... I'm sure we all talk to our chickens to some extent. For me it's normally something like "here chicky-chicky". Over the last few days, I've started 'chirping' at them. I currently only have 7 Icelandic chicks. Four 9 week olds and three 4 week olds. They are pretty much integrated at this point with the littles still able to move back and forth between the brooder and the coop. At any rate, they are chatty, funny, adorable little surprises that I am enjoying immensely! So, as I said, I find myself chirping with them trying to imitate their sounds. Today, I changed my tone and made something of a whirling sound that shut them all up. Everyone got quiet and just stared at me. Then they resumed chirping and we continued on. I found great humor in knowing I got their attention for a moment. I do think I'm beyond help at this point!![]()
I sing to mine... They love it. Or they at least they don't complain! LolPlease excuse me if I'm posting this in the wrong thread but I have to share it with you guys. When I'm integrating new chicks and the bigs are being mean at feedings I sit on the balls of my feet and put down some feed between my feet. Then I spread my arms like a hens wings protectively and start to call them "like a hen". The little come running, any bigs that come near are pushed (gently) away or blocked. Just like a good daddy (pretending to be a hen). If I adopt that pose, half the flock runs at me...Please excuse me if I'm posting this in the wrong thread but I have to share it with you guys. it was from Meyer Hatchery NEVER buying from there again it was so over priced btw the only chick that lived they had the breed wrong on and it's a roosterIt's hard to say. I ordered super cheap e-bay eggs for my first try since I had no rooster. They sent more than twice the dozen eggs I paid for, but they were badly packed. I only hatched seven, of which I still have the two pullets. It was most likely (mainly) the USPS's fault, the seller's fault, and no doubt some of my own inexperience.
Did you buy from Meyer Hatchery? They have a pretty good rep, but I wouldn't buy eggs from them. I just think they're over-priced, even though doubtless well-packed. It's always a gamble. Even super well-packed eggs can have embryos damaged or destroyed if a box is dropped--just by the sudden stop when it hits the floor. Can you maybe buy eggs locally, just to learn on? If you don't want to keep the chicks, sell them on Craig's List.
No matter how experienced you may become, buying eggs to be shipped is always gonna be a gamble. IMO, if you want certain breeds, you're better off ordering them at your feed store. They typically don't charge you shipping, there usually isn't a small order charge or a minimum order size, and they won't call you at 0200 to come pick up your chicks at the post office 25 miles away.![]()
Did you let them know the breed was wrong? Meyer is one of the best I've dealt with so far, but I would probably not buy eggs from them because of their pricing. I've gotten some nice looking pullets from them though.it was from Meyer Hatchery NEVER buying from there again it was so over priced btw the only chick that lived they had the breed wrong on and it's a rooster
Sooo cute! I love the black and yellow foot one!As promised pics from the fluffy butts. Hatched 7/2-7/3. The background is the "first-week" brooder. If you see any that look like they will be silver, scream. I'm working on a collection.
I should be an "Over 50 Hand model"...
First is Sin, first I called it "Special Needs" but it didn't like it, so I shortened it to SN and then Sin. I help as little as possible, but this one just couldn't escape the gravity of its egg. Humidity was a solid 50% but there always seems to be one.
