July Hatch-a-Long (including 4th of July hatch-a-long)

So I had 2 surprise hatchlings this week from the eggs that came with my new birds this week. I had no idea what day they were on so I just used the knowledge I have learned from all you good folks. I didn't think any would hatch honestly but I got one a couple days ago and one this morning before I left for work. There are a couple more eggs in the incubator so maybe I'll get a couple more surprises over the next few days. The eggs that were on7/10 days into development are still going good too. I will candle them again on Monday to see where we are with them. It would be cool if some hatched next Saturday it's my birthday and I hadn't planned on a birthday hatch so that would be so cool.

My duck eggs are still going strong! There’s a couple I’m a little concerned with the position of the duckling in there from what I can see candling, I might actually stop turning these guys a little earlier than normal to try to give them a bit more time to arrange themselves more appropriately... I don’t know if that makes any difference or not but I’ll try it. Lol. they’re really hard to see in now, with less than a week to go. Every once in a while someone will kick when I’m candling though, so there’s life there. Lol. The “mystery box” eggs are due Monday, and I believe at least one will be early. Some shadowing in 3 of the eggs and the one may be internally pipped by the time I get home.

The lady I bought my duck eggs from said she stopped turning hers 1 week before hatch. I only have the 1 hatch to go off but it seems like good advice. My ducklings started showing some minor shadowing on a Tuesday. They pipped Friday/Saturday and all hatched within a 12 hour window that Sunday (day 27).

Up to 9 chicks now. 4 Marans, 5 Silverudd's Blue.
For today's hatch that leaves:
1 Marans, piped and about to zip.
7 Silverudd's Blue, 1 piped.
4-55 Flowery, 1 piped.

This is such a cute hatch. My " pre culling" is going completely out the window. All keepers. I know for sure I won't keep 55 Flowery roosters so there's still hope.

The first order I placed that just hatched was from foxfirepapillons (I have had really good luck with her eggs - had great development and hatch rates with both sets of eggs I got from her and they are always packaged well). This second batch that I just ordered is from blue-ribbon_farms .

Your lot will be siblings to mine then. My hatch came from Blue Ribbon, but we went to pick them up in person since it was a reasonable distance from us at right at a hundred miles.

I am hoping they show up in good condition! Just candled a bunch from my vertical turner incubator (the one I put all my beat up eggs in) and just pulled another 15 or so that were clear or blood rings (blue laced barnevelders and Bresse eggs from Georgia). USPS's "fragile" handling is completely ruining my plans for next year! I did finally find the egg that was starting to smell up the incubator though.

Fingers crossed! Has anyone ever tried shipping with UPS or FedEx to see if they're any better? USPS seems so awful that any savings up front seems a false economy if "the goods" don't arrive in decent shape.

UPS and FedEx do not ship live chicks but I have never looked into if they ship hatching eggs... anyone know? I'd be willing to pay extra just to try them out.

Last Marans egg just hatched! That means the Marans portion of this hatch is complete. Ordered 6 eggs. Received 7.
