July Hatch-a-Long (including 4th of July hatch-a-long)

Jack is such a good daddy he just chased off a squirrel for mama after she chased it 3 times! it’s funny too because Jack left it alone when it was next to the other girls because they didn’t seem bothered but as soon as he saw mama was bothered by it, he came right over and helped her out!

Well, I had the red orp hatched when I got home, the first of the 2 BR was stuck so helped it out. The last one is being tardy but it’s still peeping away in there so whatever. The duckies are all shadowing (and still alive!) so hopefully they all do ok too.... technically not due til Friday but I haven’t hatched eggs from this hatchery yet so unsure if they’ll be on time or early or late.. my first batch was a little late but the last ones had an early bird so... I get so anxious when it’s getting closer to hatch time for the ducks... lol.
thankfully the quail eggs should be here by Wednesday to help distract me from the duckies. xD

The hatch is completed!

I ended up with 25 chicks!

14 chicks when to their new home today. A local beekeeper with a small 5 acre farm. We ended up doing a straight swap for some of her honey.

I kept 11 to grow out. Silverudd's Blues, Marans, and one adorable chipmunk one from a green speckled egg.

Had another surprise this morning. So 5 so far. The rest of the eggs aren’t due to hatch till next week I think. That’s pretty good for not having a clue when they were supposed to hatch. 4 little showgirls and 1 white silky!

Oh boy oh boy! I got internal pips in my shipped eggs! 24 of 30 is alive, which is good since they're shipped.

I got 4 (!!) broody ducks with hatch date in the next 7 days too. Gonna be a busy week!

Both polish chicks died. One never internally pipped. The other still had huge veins and was internally pipped. Guess it wasn’t meant to be.

Up at 4:30am because I kept dreaming the duckling hatched, but nope, still tucked safely in their eggs. I can see ones beak and the other one has been busy making a bigger hole all night. So now I am just sitting jn the kitchen with my coffee and eggs, chirping up a storm.

I set 8 of my own eggs. I get the other quail eggs tonight at some point. He has Scarlet/Range and SSC. They’re from my May hatch I think.

I don’t know if he has any celadon eggs but we will see tonight

One of my 1 year old silkies had went broody about 3 weeks ago....then my other 1 year old silkie went broody about 3 days ago and kicked the first one off her fake egg. Well, I just went out to the coop and found that 2nd broody silkie dead. Bull snake had her all wrapped up. She must have tried to protect the duck eggs that she had claimed this morning and got the snake mad and he killed her instead.
This is my 6th year with chickens and I haven't had any problems with snakes until this year. I have dealt with 3 inside the coop so far this summer. Hoping they are the same 3 I saw outside earlier this summer and not different ones. Anyone have good snake repellent ideas?

Once they find a food source they’ll keep coming back like any other predator. Try Lowe’s... they have snake repellent that you put on the ground.
