June Hatch A Long

I have nine that are due on the 2nd or 3rd! And two finch eggs for a few days to see if my finches are fertile. (If they are I'm not happy) The ones I have are coming along swimmingly. They're a mystery mix so who knows what's inside.

Does anyone else find that some eggs are more temperamental than others in regards to candling? I have some that I candle and they hardly move. Others I candle and they kick around and act all angry. Others get ticked if I move the egg too fast. It's kind of cute (even if it's in my head)

Yes, I always seem to have some that kick more than others and they're consistent. lol, I guess we get a sneak peek at their personalities early on! One of the chicks I had that was an absolute acrobat in the egg also manage to get out of the brooder after only about a week and a half! By the time it was 5 weeks old it flew 7' and escaped the chicken run through the only open spot on the whole thing, lol.

Just curious, but why don't you want your finch eggs to be fertile?

I found that the ones who are the most active in the eggs have the biggest personalities. Angry Baby was a kicker. When he hatched he was always puffed up with pride and demanding. I love him so much. :p he crowed once, so I rehomed him, and he's never crowed since. He's hilarious.

My finches aren't set up to be parents (Their cage). They're also TERRIBLE at anything parent like. They dropped an egg and are hiding in the corner of the cage from it. I once tried giving them a nest, they hid in terror from it. The male got a female? He hid in terror from her for a year. Based on how clueless they are and how long it takes them to learn things, I don't want to risk giving them a baby. The one finch egg that did hatch I ended up caring for because the parents had no idea what to do. It sucked BIG time. And my male is really, really mean. He was an adorable female until I woke up and he'd murdered my other male. Then he grew his proper male feathers. I mean, I CAN do a baby, I just don't want to. And I feel better tossing out non fertile eggs for some reason.

I've got a broody Sebright hen named Moonshine, sitting on 4 Spitzhauben eggs. This should be day 3. I had a pair of Spitzhaubens that I recently sold but I had saved their last eggs in case someone went broody, and Moonshine volunteered. So June 13-14 will be hatch day if all goes well.....

I found two quitters today. That makes 7 still going out of the dozen I set. I tweaked my setup ever so slightly. I don't think it was humid enough.

Baby Number Two nearly became the third I lost today. He's a green egg so it's hard to see in. I'm sitting in a dark room, all alone, candling eggs. He looks like he's got a blood ring but I'm not positive. I really focus on it, trying to decide, when BAM. Baby doesn't just move across the egg. This thing FLIES. It was like a washing machine on spin cycle. Scared me so bad I nearly dropped the egg. I had to take a deep breath and check to see what the HECK happened. I think he got ticked off at the light and shuffled, because I saw movement afterwards as well.

I've never seen a baby egg on spin cycle before. I already like him.
