June Hatch A Long

So one of my eggs that made it to lock down was an egg that had a pretty large air cell when I received it in the mail. I was not hopeful for it at all, but it surprised me and developed.

The other three chicks hatched, this one didn’t even pip, so I candled it. The membrane had collapsed on it. I chipped off the top put on some coconut oil, the blood vessels are not dried up yet, picked a little tiny hole in the membrane so it can breathe, and put it back in the incubator. Hoping for the best.

On a happier note, chick number three appears to be a blue copper Marans

Oh good luck!!! Fingers crossed. I’m afraid my larger air cell I posted earlier has something similar going on but I have too many eggs to do anything for this early and jeopardize the rest.

I waited until the 3 good eggs hatched, totally didn’t want to risk shrink wrapping them! Good luck with yours! I only had 5 eggs in lockdown to start, with one developed way behind the others but not dead.

I was able to save 3 of 5 assists today. That was heart-wrenching! Lost 2 of my malpositions, one of them was simply because I couldn't find the head and I hesitated too long and the other I didn't notice there was an issue until too late. Well if I was questioning whether I wanted to give shipped eggs a go or not, I know I certainly DO NOT want to now. That was hard enough! I can handle the early quitters, not these late quitters.

The final count for this hatch: 64% - started with 33, 11 infertile, 8 quitters (2 were late losses), 14 live chicks.

This was my worst hatch to date, not including the goose hatch that was also this month at 60% hatch rate but it was only 5 fertilized eggs. I'm glad I'm keeping notes so maybe I will be able to see if the time of year or the heat has anything to do with my hatch rates after continuing to document next year.

On a more positive note, I candled my peacock eggs and turkey eggs and it appears I have 100% fertility!

Were they refrigerated eggs? I don't have a local Trader Joe's unfortunately but there is a Whole Foods and a Fresh Market. I wonder if theirs would work. I may need to look into this more just for the fun of it. lol

I lost a bird tonight. Weird. In my Broiler pen I have a male and female Delaware I was going to keep with my layers later and see about working on a heritage meat breed. No one in TX has heritage/breeder Delawares and the guy who gave them to me, they were his last he is hatching and got rid of his flock. To someone NOT in TX.

Anyway, that boy and girl range the farthest of all the young 50+ birds I just put out on pasture. They never really bonded to the other birds and were stuck to each other’s side. Tonight at feeding and closing up he is nowhere to be found! I wondered if maybe he overheated but they were in shade there and no one Else is heat stressed. I’m thinking a snake. Ugh.

At least I sort of hope so. 90% of my birds are too big for a snake to really try to take them down. If those Delawares were just laying in the grass they absolutely could have been gotten.

Luckily she doesn’t seem bothered. Maybe he was holding her back.

Guess that answers if I’m starting THAT project this year!

Owls here first time in forever I heard them calling to each other last night and woke up this morning to a bird missing. Adding fencing over the top of the pen and the chicken tractor so that we can protect them from it. Also set up a game camera to get them on tape and got a picture of my horses rear. She's so funny. Rotten pony.

Yes, they were 5 days old when I got them from the store according to the julian date stamped on the carton. I asked someone to go in the back and check for fresher. I let them come to room temp overnight, also I cracked one open to check for fertility and found the bullseye.

Trader joe’s Sells a “fertile” egg specifically I don’t know if anyone else has them....

@LilyD ugh. I’m sorry. And @CluckNDoodle you we’re right. I lost another one today. My 10 week old BcM pullet.


She was SO pretty. So iridescent. No chocolate eggs anymore. She is all I kept from the marans I hatched because I dna tested her after helping her hatch and she was a she. I’ll have to hatch some more. :-/

I’m sure it will pass along if I keep them locked up but it’s TOO hot for that.
