June Hatch-A-Long

Ok I am looking at getting chickens to add to my mini farm here. I have about 9 hours before the auction ends. I am thinking of getting Lavender Brahmas. I know that these are usually a calm chicken. Do you think this is a good chicken to start with? Also do you think they are large enough that the hens would be safe from drakes that are bantam drakes?

How much are they at so far?

I got 12 Maran eggs for $10 local pickup

I just checked this morning and some "newbie" ebay bidders have it up to $35.00 already for 8/10 eggs. :rant There is still 6 hours until the end of the auction. Last night they were only at $18.00 with 3 of us at a starting bid waiting for closer to the end of the auction.

Bought the Wheaten Marans eggs. Luckily the price didn't increase after it hit $35.00 until the last couple of seconds. I put in my max bid and one other person put in a bid...so got them for $37.00 plus shipping (I would probably pay what I paid in shipping to go pick up eggs personally...probably more than what I paid to find any of these that are anywhere nearby). I really liked how informative and knowledgeable the seller was, so think the extra cost will be worth it. Now to wait for shipping notifications on all my eggs (Silkies, Swedish Flower Hens, and Wheaten Marans). Done egg shopping for now.

Got my eggs (and new chicks) on Saturday; 2 satin silkie eggs, 4 regular silkie, and 6 silver sebright eggs. :p still waiting on my new incubator but I had some room in with the duck eggs (since 3/6 quit ☹️) so I put 8 in there. I love bantam eggs. Haha. So we’ll see how I do with those. They’ll all be hatching almost on time together so it worked out. (Duck eggs due the 28-29th, chicken eggs will be 30th). Got 3 new chicks in the meantime as well; a pretty little silver sebright (think it’s a cockerel) a whiting true blue (also probably a cockerel) and a really sweet, gimpy EE. (Which I think might be a pullet). Yay babies! Haha. 😝

I have tons of bantams in my bator right now. I’m obsessed with those little eggs. I’ll be doing more too in June.

They’re so handy because they’re small! This sebright I just got is 1/3 the size of my silkie x cockerel and only a week behind in age. I love it. Haha. Gets me thinking of all the ways I can just tuck one more of them into one of the coops. xD

I can fit 4 bantam eggs to 1 large chicken egg. Should see how much quail and bantam eggs I have. Incubator holds 42. I probably have 60.

After the rocky midway point for my May broody I was apprehensive about giving another hen that's gone broody but then thought what the hell and I'm going for it.

My broody is a Pekin Bantam and she's never gone broody before so it's her first batch. I'm going to give her some LF Welsummer eggs tomorrow which should hatch June 2nd. The issue I'm having with her is that she refuses to move into the maternity ward.

I move her and her fake plastic eggs into the lovely clean hutch but she just doesn't settle so I let her out so she doesn't get stressed and she's straight back in her nest box in the main coop. Do I just move her when it's dark? Or should I just set her there and keep an eye on her near the due date?
