June Hatch-A-Long

Did you see my original post. I think it’s sticky chick which is why it’s malpositioned. I’d put it in a cup so it can’t be rolled and add coconut oil to the air cell membrane so you can keep an eye on that to know when to assist. Monitoring the vessels is important. I don’t always hear sticky chicks struggle.... so you just have to go in when the membrane clears.
It is the only chick right now trying to hatch. So I haen't put it in the cup yet. I am keeping a close eye on it. But there is a huge vein so I have put it back in to wait a few hours to see where it is then.

13 are out, the blue one is almost out, the tan one quit, fully formed, the brown looks fluid-y, and the white looks not ready, but saw movement, I gave the white and brown to a broody. *Took a bath went back to check on broody, a diff bird was there, to be safe they went back to incubator.White egg still had movement.
The blue egg needed help, but it hatched, I put chick back in incubator to dry up and get sea legs.

The good news is I don't think it was the yolk. I don't see any remains of the sack with how it is positioned. Its head is between the wings and the feet are not visable nor is that whole part of the body at the moment. I didn't do much messing around with it as there was a single big red vein in the membrane I could see and I didn't want to acciently break that open.

It is very wet in there I did try to wipe away as much as i could get out. Both last night and this morning. The breathing is much better and it even cheeped at me today. Now i am left with the delinma of to apply oil right now or not because i am worried abotu adding more moisture to the egg at this point.

Glad to hear that it's probably not the yolk - gives more hope for the little one. A little bit of coconut oil on the membrane shouldn't add much in terms of liquid, just carefully apply a tiny bit to the membrane with a Q-tip to keep it moist and so you can monitor the veins. Just on the membrane though :)

So I come in from working on the duck house trim and look what I found in my incubator with my Death Layer chick.

SurpriseDuckling!

they were not due to hatch till Monday but looks like I have 4 other pips.

Update on my chick. It’s still in egg. All veins look like they have receded and when I got a peek at the belly it looked like the yolk was absorbed. I have opened the egg enough for it to finish hatching on its own now just watching for it to do its thing.

14 chicks so far with 3 eggs left.

Unfortunately I lost one in a perfect mid-zip when a trio of wet wobbly hatchlings decided to go bowling.
The unlucky zipper was sent crashing into the side of the bator and flipped upside down. By the time I could corral the rowdies it was too late. It never moved after that. I left it in the bator overnight with high hopes that maybe my tiredness was missing signs of life, but no.
When I opened it late this afternoon there was a little liquid on it's beak and nostrils and it would appear to have drowned when it landed in just the wrong way. Everything else about it looked perfect. It was a special egg, along with one other from the same hen, that I had high hopes for. And it was grey too! :hit
At least I can hatch more of them.

3 others I had to help just a little bit. I checked my notes and saw that too much time had passed from external pip and these were more porous eggs, so I cautiously took a peek. Very glad I did because one was shrink wrapped and the other two were semi-shrink wrapped. A little coconut oil and back in the bator to finish cooking. About an hour later the 2 semi- shrink wrapped ones popped right out and are fine.
The third is still resting inside the egg and getting it's golden brown and delicious on. :D

Of the two remaining whole eggs, one has an external pip and candle shows good movement inside. I'm waiting to see what happens. The other doesn't have an internal pip at all. Again, waiting to see. Today is day 21.
