So are we sure this enough room for 6 chicks (max) for days 1-3 before we move them to the garage? It seems so tiny! I’ve got a mason jar size feeder coming, but I’ll ductape some of the anti slip mat to the top of the heat plate to give them a little more room.

Also, will they be able to reach this drinker? The nipple is about 2.5inches off the ground, or do I need to put it on something lower?

First time chick mum....I’m literally nesting.

I agree with Jolenesdad. It should be plenty of room. Mine sleep a lot the first few days so not much need for a lot of wondering room.

Thank you! I had wondered if the autosexing would show up in the progeny. I'll be sure to check that out.

Some of the RR have yellow spots on the heads, which as I understand is linked to the barring gene. I've got some elastic bands on the way to mark those because they are just growing too fast for zip ties.

We must be on the same wavelength. I just ordered beilefelder eggs last night. My Hoover chicks are doing ok, although I've lost 6 out of 18. How are your Hoover chicks doing?

Our first baby from the second part of our staggered hatch is out on day 19! Precocious little thing! We have two more pips, all from our own eggs, and we're still waiting on 9 shipped eggs. Today is just day 20, though, so I'm not worried.

Here's the sweet little thing. We're thinking its mom is our barred rock, but we're not 100% sure. There are some silver patches on its back, so maybe its mom is our silver laced wyandotte. I guess we'll have to wait and see as it grows!

What is the dad?

If it’s barred rock and the dad is a certain coloring, you can make sex links.

Oh sorry to hear that. Mine are ok. The Partridge Rocks were have problems with messy bottoms the first 4 or 5 days but have straighten that out. They seem like very very slight chicks to begin with so perhaps not a very robust line. Doesn't help that the RR are double the size and double the vigor.... making them seem even more puny. JG are doing ok.

What breed(s) are your chicks and which ones did you lose?

If it’s barred rock and the dad is a certain coloring, you can make sex links.

We aren't sure who the dad is! We don't have any full-sized mature roosters, so it's a bantam of some kind. Our main roos are a white silkie, a red cochin, or a barred mixed breed (mom is an olive egger, and dad is the red cochin bantam). There aren't any feathered legs, so that probably rules out the cochin. We're thinking maybe the silkie, but there aren't any extra toes. I think the baby may have puffy cheeks, so that adds to the mystery. It will be interesting to see if it develops a crest.

Went out this morning to feed and happened upon a rather unpleasant site....something had gotten a hold of a chicken through the fence and had done enough damage that she had just passed away probably five minutes prior. There would have been no saving her anyway.
So, now the trap is back out and hopefully the meager handful that whatever it was got won't be enough and it will go for the bait in the trap.
*sigh*
It's the worst part of keeping small livestock vs bigger livestock. Everything wants a piece of them
