June Hatch-A-Long

I use the 1/4" baby poultry leg bands, I think it actually says medium but I find they fit the silkies comfortably and have enough room to grow for a little while. I can't remember who originally suggested this size to me but I'm glad they did because the teeny tiny ones are hard to handle and you have to change them really quickly but they're all really stretchy and much safer to use than the zip ties if you're not the super vigilant type about changing them.
Mine pop off if their leg gets too big. It’s pretty nice.

@FortCluck what size bands did you get for your chicks. I have mostly silkies I need to band but I’m afraid everything will be to big. Any ideas? Thanks!
I ordered sizes 4, 5, and 6 in the soft elastic chick bands.
4 would fit day old regular chicks...but only for a few days!
5's are what I just put on some of my nearly 2 wk olds and they probably have a week or two before I'll have to change them.
6 was too big even for the Red Rangers, which are twice the size of the standards at the same age.

I would guess size 3 for a snug bare legged fit, and 4 for a decent fit for feathered feet. Probably should get size 5 too, which is the same size as a regular pencil.

Here's a size chart off one of the hatchery sites for standards-
Day old standards- 1/4"
Month old standards- 3/8"
Growing standards - 7/16"
Medium chickens - 5/8"
Large chickens - 11/16"
XL or roosters - 3/4"

Does Corid have a use-by date? I'm wanting some in my kit, but I've never had problems yet :fl and don't want to end up just tossing it.
Most vet meds have an expiration date on the bottle/tube/ package. You can generally consider them still good up to about a year after that date, depending on how they are stored. All my animal meds are kept in the house. Most (most) meds won't hurt an animal well after they expire, they just won't be as effective. General antibiotics of course are much more sensitive, unless they are in seperate vials until mixed together for use. Sometimes those can or need to be stored in the fridge

Can't remember if I posted it here or not, but when I set my Biele eggs Tuesday morning I made a little cradle to hold the worst air celled egg upright (with a balancing egg from my flock on the opposite side) in my horizontal turner bator.

Out of curiosity, last night I took a tiny not so bright flashlight and tried to peek into the eggs while they stayed in the bator. All I did was remove the lid and shine it down on the 2 upright eggs and a few that are on their sides.
The darker upright egg that was saddled the worst looked interesting. The air pocket side that was halfway down the shell had come up to the top, but was totally jiggy and loose on that side. I could not tell if there was any development yet, too dark to see beyond the air cell. My own blue egg was fine though the yolk was near the top, not in the middle. Don't know what that means, if anything.

I tried to peek into a few eggs on their sides with my dull light and think (?? :fl ??) I might have seen some light veining. that was last night and today is just now going on day three.
If I can behave myself I won't do a full candle until day 7, but might recheck the upright egg in the same manner to see what the air cell does and if it can be put on it's side.
For now I'm gently twisting the 2 upright eggs 5 to 7 times a day.
The yolk will float upward since it's a globe of fat in a sea of denser protein. Is your blue egg sitting upright also--is that what you were saying? If so, that would be the reason the yolk is up there. Otherwise, IDK. 🤷‍♀️ I don't think I'd worry about it, though (if you were worrying).

Get yourself the brightest light you can reasonably afford. Get a good one. It's disappointing to spend the money, then have it quit half a year out. (Don't ask how I know... 🤦‍♀️)

I pick up and candle all my eggs (except broodies' eggs) every single day. If it hurts them, I can't tell it. They seem to do fine. Just pay attention to your grip. It's easy to get distracted by the awesomeness and loosen your hold on the egg. :love
