. Well the hens appear to be a type of red sexlink so that would explain why the chicks don't look like mom or dad they won't breed true because they are a cross so as the chicks are yellow my guess is the silver or dominate white color gene of the grandma is coming out which is normal when you breed a sexlink hen You need to remember that the hen only contributes one color gene to her offspring and the roo two so in a mixed or cross you can end up with recessive colors from several generations back depending on what was used to create the original bird

Hey guys, a quick update for me! So my last hatch before this one none hatched. I suddenly thought it might be the thermometer, and sure enough it was reading a full three degrees low! So the babies had been developing, but so abnormally they were unable to hatch. So this time I bought a new thermometer, calibrated, and it was near dead on. I kept the other thermometer in there too, knowing it was low, to temp one side and the accurate to temp the other.

I tried to candle on day three with a little flashlight, since I had lost my good candling flashlight, and I couldn't see anything happening. I got nervous, since I can always get more marans eggs, but I can never get more Cider eggs. So tonight while I was out I bought a new high power led mini flashlight and that sucker is BRIGHT!

Turns out all of Cider's eggs are developing

And, as a bonus, the flashlight is so bright it could see into the marans eggs too and from what I can see most are coming along nicely!
I had the same problem with my first two hatches. I believe the thermometer that came with the bator was off. On the third attempt I got two new thermometers and 7 out of 9 chicks hatched! Yay. Now I have 7 babies a week old, 2 chickens that are 4 weeks old and 2 that are 8 weeks. Done hatching for the summer - now I have to figure out what works well in the coop, researching an automatic water-er. Can't stand their water being so dirty! My husband thinks I am crazy....but oh well, it isn't the first time he's thought that. Good luck to you in your hatch!
