ARG! Totally with you on clumsy fingers. I am hand turning my eggs....and I have already found one crack that I know I made.

Thanks for posting the pic though, I liked seeing it. How old was it, do you know?

I'm not sure. I put them under her on May 20 & 21 but when I candled one week later, the eggs looked more developed (granted the is the first time ever that I've candled so I may not have seen it right examplephotos). They looked like they were at 10-12 days. So based on calendar, it was 9-10 days old; going by what I think I saw on candling, it was 12-14 days; going by photos here, day 8-9.


Hopefully your cracked egg will still develop. My egg was more than just cracked, it was like when trying to open an egg for cooking.

when do i candle my eggs the first time to outline the air sack, before i start incubating or on the seventh day?

I waited until my Day 7 candle - I found lots of pictures online of where the 7, 14, and 18th days should look like. There isn't much to mark when you candle the first day if the eggs are really fresh. With shipped eggs it will let you know how scrambled they go in the mail if the air sac moves around a lot. I didn't bother drawing them on my first set of eggs because they were shipped and the air sacs were all saddle shaped by Day 7.

Yesterday was day 10 for me.... I got to build a better candler. Those darker eggs are difficult to see thru. Everything looks good so far. I only have 1 clear egg, out of 16 eggs (1 broke last week due to handler malfunction). There are a couple of ones that are a bit behind, but everyone looks good.

It's only been 10 days.... feels like FOREVER! 21 days feels too long.

Day 14 here. Same problem with the candler. I am not sure it's the color of the shell as much as the thickness. I built what I thought was going to be a pretty good candler but still cannot make out much other that I can see embryos in all 9 and that they are growing. Some of them are on the small side but still seem viable. Marked the airsacs today when I candled so I can monitor the increase over the next couple days. I'll be glad when I am done with this first hatch so I will know what to look for in the next one. That's assuming my young bride doesn't move me and the incubator to the barn.

My broody took to the move to the basement from the coop just fine. Locked her in a small dog crate for the first two days. She sat off to the side of the eggs for a couple hours and then finally moved into the egg crate I put the in the pen and has been sitting ever since except to get up and drink a little water and get some food. Anyone think her being off that long is a problem? I think I will candle them in a couple of days before I lock down the bator and if they don't look like they are progressing I might put a couple of the bator eggs under her to hatch. Any feedback on that will be appreciated. I am hoping she will adopt all of them after the hatch.

. She will take anything you give her polak ducks quail chicks she will take to them it's the other way round you have to deal with the bird will imprint on the first thing it sees and that will be you mom ! Lol as for the cool down don't sweat it I have had them taken from Broodys and put in egg cartons and hatched them after 15-16 hour cool down they may be a lil late but they will go

The broody being off the eggs for a couple of hours should be fine ( unless the room was at 40 or something).

With my broody, I gave her shipped chicks, just tucked them one at a time under her belly.

She was thrilled, and did a fantastic job. You will need to watch her for a bit, to make sure she is going to be a good mama hen. All are so different.

So are you saying to put the bator eggs under her instead of locking them down in the bator so they imprint? The two under her now are about a week behind the ones in the bator. Also, do you have that link to the progression pics?

Just got my Buff Orpingtons in today and will let them sit and get cookin' in the morning. Should be a June 21 +/- hatch!! Hope the 3rd time's a charm!!!
