June Hatch a Long

I candled from both ends and the sides too, trying to get the best image I could, but I think the shell is too thick or too dark. Im not completely sure. About what you see in the picture is the best detail i can get from the flashlight. I dont ahve anything brighter for now. Im just hoping they are not bad eggs!

My eggs are so dark....and my candler not so good so I see exactly what you are seeing. I am only able to see a dark area and then a more see through area...just like in your picture. I am able to see if the eggs are good by the fact that the dark area keeps getting larger.

Oh, I got mine from a lady who knows that her rooster doesn't give 100% coverage. The infertile ones are easy to tell after 7 or so days. With the infertile eggs the yolk never got that dark, so those eggs have only a soft shadow where the yolk is...the yolk never got totally dark like the fertile eggs.

ETA: that picture you showed is a perfect picture of a developing egg.

Im glad to hear it looks normal! The 5 eggs I tosses out were obviously not right, a blood ring and very clear ones. Im hoping these ones last through the end of the hatch, which should be the 17th.

Well, I was not expecting to get in on the June hatching thread, as I was sure I was done incubating for the season.....
Then my brother called to tell me he had a duck that was on a nest get killed, so I drove and got 12 eggs, with no idea when she had started setting.
that was a couple weeks ago.
I have never done ducks before, do I just threw them in and hoped for the best.
Wouldn't you know it the twelfth one hatched a bit ago

They are cute little buggers, but good grief for slobs!
Awww! Glad you were able to save them.

Does it count if I started half of mine in May? I put 20 White Silkies, and 22 Black Australorps in on May 25th, then put a hen on 6 and 6 of the same breed the following day. Put up a full 42 Australorps on Friday the 31st, then finally let my poor silkie hen have 6 of her own eggs to sit on June 3rd. I can only leave the poor girls sitting on empty nests for so long before I let them be mamas.
Just wanted to say Welcome to Cluckerbocker.
Thanks and you too.

Today I received 2 lots of eggs, 9 of silver laced orps and 6 red sex links but 2 of the eggs were broken. They were packaged in a normal eggbox with scrunched up newspaper around the box of eggs which was inside a bigger box. Not surprised that 2 were broken and am not expecting much for the remaining 4. The 9 were beautifully wrapped and not a mark on them.

I am expecting another 8 tomorrow so will leave the ones that I have standing in the boxes so they can settle although I am dying to put them in the incubator but will hold off.

If I were to put them in the incubator tomorrow morning and then my other 8 in tomorrow night, would that be ok when it comes to lockdown because of different setting times or should I rather wait for all eggs to have settled and then place them all together in the incubator? How long can they stand settling before they have to be put into the incubator to still be viable?
I've heard of people putting eggs in bators but not turning them to allow settling. Don't know if that is better or not.

CG.

I'm umming and arrghing whether to do it, if I do pip the egg will it encourage the chick to hatch quicker ? Also have u ever pipped where the chick hasn't actually internally pipped yet ?

Yes I have, and it did pip and live. I have saved more by helping. I have lost a lot by doing nothing.

If you are at day 9 you should see an air cell by now. I see mine even in dark eggs before I even place them in the bator. The air cell forms the min the egg leaves the hens body. I would take a sniff everyday to be sure...lol

Yeah I am seeing the air cell.  its small right now...will it grow bigger over time?  or will it stay the same size through incubation?

Watching the air cell is one way to make sure your humidity isn't too high. The air cell is supposed to get larger through out the incubation. Somewhere are pictures to show how much it is supposed to grow. Hummmmm
