June Hatch a Long

I set 19 eggs on June 3.  My rooster died a couple of days later (we knew he was dying, so I set the last of his viable eggs).  When I candled at day 7, there were 7 clears, so I had 12 still there.  Yesterday, I took another peek at them, and 3 more have also quit (but they are fairly dark green, so I'm leaving them in there in case I just couldn't see what was going on AND they don't smell).  That leaves 9 (or so).

Friday is day 18, so I'll take out the turner, increase the humidity, and keep my fingers crossed.  This is my first attempt at hatching, and it was only to try to hatch a new little roo with the personality of his father.  Borrowed an incubator, bought a turner.  I'm as nervous as a cat with one kitten.

I can see how it can be addicting.  Just seeing those little developing chicks swim around in there was a real kick.
Hens can lay fertile eggs up to two weeks if they have been around a roo. So maybe the next clutch you get will be more viable. Good luck

Butch had been ill for over a week, so I felt lucky to get as many fertile as there were.

The up side is that the person I got him from a little over a year ago has his son (hatched a week after I took him) and said she would let me have him. Butch was an EE son of a pure Arucana (sp I know is completely wrong) and the most wonderful rooster I've ever been around. He was death on hawks, gentle on the girls, and completely non-aggressive to humans. She says the son is just like his dad was, so I do have a plan B.

I'm just keeping my fingers crossed.

Plan B sounds like a winner to me if he is just like his dad. Either way Good Luck

I kinda doing the same with BA's I hatched since I had to cull a roo with leg issues. I have at leat 2 young pure BA's that look very promising to replace him. I looking for 2 for SL and pure BA. And still have hens and 1 of the adult roos to breed them back to. So without alot of of losses I will be able to perpetuate my BA flock as it stands. And have a couple years worth of birds for SL lines.

when colecting eggs do i need to tilt side to side while waiting to be incubating or i can just put it in a carton til the day i will incubate.?

also how long can i let an egg stand before its too old to incubate?

Hi Dolfi,
Yes.. Turn ( or tilt) at least 3 X's a day after collection..........keeps the yolks from sticking on one side...........
Some say 10 days.7 is best for collection time.
GOOD LUCK................

With assistance earlier keet hatched and I was thinking thats it. Its 14 from broody nest. But just checked and another has pipped. These guys seem to wait until 1 is completely hatched to start themselves. Looks like could be a week long hatch LOL. Show me for messing with mama I guess.
