This was a tough hatch month. The 12 shipped “rare” eggs arrived in awful shape. 6-7 of the local Serama eggs were old/clear. 2 of the long shots were from new hens that had been housed with cockerels. 4 of the long shots were the roadside/then refrigerated eggs.

Regardless, we are happy with the chicks that hatched. And... there is always next month. :lau

Shipped eggs are ALWAYS a toss-up! It's not that I needed all those chicks, I just really don't like losing eggs. It has really helped me this month and last month partaking in these hatch-a-longs because I can see that others are having similar experiences.

You should wait until fall to do another hatch and if we can get enough people involved maybe a fall hatch-a-long! lol

I want to do shipped eggs this fall of two or three breeds I want to work on long term. I’ll just focus on raising pullets this year and practicing evaluating them with a mentor in the breed. So maybe a mid to late September hatch?

Great update, sorry you had a rough hatch overall! Your lockdown percentage is pretty good for shipped eggs!!!

You had an interesting month! And did well with shipped eggs. What’s the story behind wanting to incubate the roadside table eggs???

We are planning to try again with BCM in the fall, especially if we can get eggs from dark layers within driving distance!
