This guy was born at 8:00 am cst. What is this string like thing? I felt on the belly but didn’t see anything weird. Is it dried yolk or something more serious? I’m afraid to pull on it.

Don't pull it! It's the umbilicus, occasionally it takes a little longer to fall off. Just let it dry and it will fall off naturally.

Were they still double boxed?

Every shipped egg I’ve ever received has been double boxed until these pillow eggs.

I also received some sulverrudds that were near perfect. One cracked egg but no displaced cells. These were foam shipped and double boxed with foam support on the outside. Here they are. This was my best foam shipper ever. I typically do not like foam shipped eggs.

What CluckNDoodle said! However, if it’s long enough that ducky might walk on it, then you should be able to snip it to a length just short enough that he won’t step on it.

On closer inspection I found 2 ever so slightly displaced Brahma (pillow pack) eggs. They look like the oldest eggs of the bunch.

I think that’s another thing to discuss with a breeder. If getting shipped eggs. What can you ship the DAY it’s laid? It’s harder to displace a tiny air cell.

But now more thoughts...

I’m honestly starting to wonder if we give too much thought to the aircell in the first place. I incubated all those shipped cells on their side the last time anyway. The Silverudd breeder stressed she uses the foam walls on the outside to cushion the egg with give to not scramble the yolk.

Somehow I think the scrambling of the yolk is the biggest issue is shipped egg incubators face that may not be directly related to the air cell. It’s probably related to a completely DETACHED air cell, but I’m thinking a yolk could be scrambled on a day old shipped egg without a detached air cell just as much as a yolk could NOT be scrambled on a displaced air cell that comes from a 5 or 6 day old egg.

That yolk scrambling has got to be part of what contributes to such late quitters.

Yeah, it was really long. I just trimmed it. And then I took spent some time petting it. So sweet!

I love that you are getting all of these adorable duckies!!! So they remind you of their dad? Did I see on another thread that dad was names Count Blackula? Sorry again that you lost your drake but glad his babies are there for you!

i went out to check on my broody hen, and my mama hen with babies was in her nest and had broken 2 of her eggs. One little baby is still alive in the broken egg. The eggs are on day 16. I don't want to put the egg back in the nest because I'm sure it will just make a mess. So sad to know its alive and nothing I can do.
