Sarah (first pic) is 18 weeks, recent comb and waddle development and color change. Also attached is Winnie, who is the same age but not as developed. So how close are we thinking to laying based on this?

Color changes usually are at least one month from onset of lay.. sometimes it can be longer.

I've also heard they will check out the nesting areas when approaching laying age. Has anyone observed this-do they seem to make a mess of the nest area when checking it out? I have one older layer and when I get her egg or see her she is in the same spot and seems like she always leaves it in "nest condition " with a nice little area made to lay. But recently it will be rough looking in there other than when the layer comes out. Could someone be checking it out? No one sleeps in there.

Have they started laying yet?
Ugh, no 😩 I feel like I'll never get eggs from the girls. I did check the bones as suggested, and there has been a lot of change there. And a visual of the vent shows a difference. Hers is more "open" looking. They are at almost 21 weeks now. Her comb and waddles are even bigger.

Sarah on right, Winnie on left. Both almost 21 weeks.
