Well said. What you are suggesting reminds me of "It's a Wonderful Life." That American attitude of helping others (rather than profiting from them) flew out the window circa 1980. Too bad.
It just makes me shake my head to see people with religious quotes in their sigs, or who I know to be religious folks, laughing at a joke that basically rips on the poor. There a word to describe this, but I'll probably get this thread locked if I use it, and I'm not usually one to make waves on the forum. So I'll leave you all with some statements. If these don't apply to you personally, I don't expect you to be offended. Just something to think about around the holidays.
"I'll help, but only when it's convenient for me."
"I'll help, but only if it affects my own family or my children."
"I'll help, but only if I don't have to go into THAT neighborhood."
"I'll help, but only if the people I'm helping look like me."
"I'll help, but only if you join my church." (I go to church, so I'm not attacking church-goers. Some people are like this.)
"I'll help, but only if I'm recognized or rewarded somehow."
I wish there was a smiley for throwing up.
