Kayla’s Flock!

Pics
I used zipties before. They work better on the littles than any leg band ive bought, but theyre not always easy to get off. Human nail clippers worked for me on the more difficult ones especially on the squirmy birds ;)
Never though of that! I’ve always used a pair of sissors. That’s a good idea though!

Honestly I let the chickens do their thing, but the coop is the real deal- wicked warm in the winter, and we usually don't get any problems with frostbite. Nights are usually 20oF or lower and it stays around 30oF inside.

Winter of 2015 and the 3ft-a-day was NOT fun.

Another question: Has anyone tried chicken sweaters? (google it if you don't know) I feel like it would be nice for the late molters, but, they are.... sweaters... for chickens...

(also, good night everyone :))

When you get back in the AM ...

Good Morning!

I would love for my coop to be "wicked warm" in the winter! What's your "secret?"

And I've never used a chicken sweater (unless you count the ugly Christmas chicken sweater I wore to a party once,) but I know people who've made them. They're awfully cute, but from what I've read, they're more of a hazard than a help. Apparently they really don't work, because they don't allow the chicken to fluff up what feathers they still have and damage both the feathers that are left and the new ones coming in. So the consensus seemed to be "put them on long enough to take a funny picture ... then take 'em off and throw them away."

**Note to all**
Just so you guys know... I want you guys to post pictures/stories/questions, etc! I know the title is “Kayla’s Flock” but feel free to share info about your own flock too! :)
My apologies - I kinda hijacked ... Sorry!

The coop is very insulated with the same insulation foam thing that we use in our house as well as some other materials that keep the cold out (I'm no pro, and we made this 8 years ago). We fill the inside floor with hay. The chickens don't usually roost on the roosting sticks in the winter, they typically hang out under the nesting boxes (or in them) and cuddle up there. 12 chickens piled up in one corner with tons of hay makes it very warm. The hay/straw is like a blanket to them. In the spring, they go back to the roosting stick and it's fine after that.

The coop has ventilation under the roof, but it's placed accordingly so when the wind comes, you don't feel anything. Here, the wind chill is high so having little wind coming through makes the coop even warmer.
