First things first when you first got it did you heat it up and let it set for a couple days for it to settle and gave it time to hold a temp? Like as it was without calibrating stuff and whatever. Like right out the box? Or longer? Just letting it run unmolested

Yeah, I had it running for like days before I even got the eggs.

And also I got it in March so I tested it and ran it some back then too. But it has been sitting since then. Maybe something got messed up in storage.

Dont worry kiki I ain't saying nothing about calibrating but she needed a starting point to see if anything was actually wrong without dicking around with it right out the box
I don't think she has done anything to the bator instruments themselves....ever.

oh ok I assumed you just got it. Next time run it for about a week. Fluctuations of a tenth of a degree will happen. You're looking for an average you wont have an exact temperature constantly. I haven't been able to keep up with the thread but it seems like one of the problems and a big problem to me was not giving it time to settle between messing with it. Especially when first putting eggs in it will vary greatly while the eggs are coming up to temp which would or could take 24hrs or more. Adding water will also do it. If you need to add water add slightly warm water. It will need to resettle after putting water in it. If you have it running steady for a week put the eggs in and forget it practically.

The only reason I messed with it was because I had tested it before when I first got it and knew it ran high so I just turned it down. But tbh I probably should have just left it on the lower temp, the one I knew was right, instead of turning it up and down. I think the problem was probably when I had it set slightly higher and I think the actual temp was probably way too high. That and I think I turned it up and down some too and I also had it in room at first instead of in the hall so that may have done it too because I had the room temp going up and down a lot too.

What do you mean by done anything? Like adjusted the temp and stuff? I have, that’s why it’s set to 97.5 instead of 99.5. And I’ve played with the menu and stuff. There’s a room temp setting and of course the hatch timer and number of turns per day and that sort of stuff. Unless that’s not what you mean by messing with it haha

You didn't calibrate the humidity gauge or the thermometer that came installed in the incubator is what I meant.

You can adjust the temp all you want but you won't know if it is correct unless you have a calibrated thermometer inside.

AND you now see that you can't trust the installed thermometer, right?

Nah, I’ve had it, I’ve just never used it before. Originally I wanted to participate in the Easter Hatch A Long but then I never did.

And thanks, I’ll try all this next time. I probably should have let it run longer first or messed with it more first. But now I know.

And I have added water a couple of times. Wonder if that could mess anything up.

And I think I definitely did mess with it too much at first. I was a bit paranoid about it hence all the adjusting the temp but I got over it and have basically left it alone since. At least until the last couple days. Which honestly might be part of the problem because I should have been paying more attention to it. I was trying so hard not to mess with it or candle too much, not to obsess over temp too much, etc. cause I know you guys had mentioned that wasn’t good and to leave it alone, but I think I went too much the other way. To almost ignoring it. Which also wasn’t good. I think next time (if there is one) I need to be somewhere more in the middle.

Pretend like your incubator doesn't have a thermometer.
Don't even look at the one the reading on the thing that came installed.

Make the adjustments based on your calibrated thermometers.
This is why having multiple calibrated thermometers inside is a good idea because you will know at a quick glance where your hot and cool spots are too.
