Keeping Fish

How is everyone this morning? I was out of town for a a few days and came back yesterday. I checked on my hobby tank last night and was astounded to see one young female guppy dead, two fish acting strangely, and the entire tank looking dirty. I hope the rest of my fish are okay....I'm off to check on them now.
 
I feel horrible and dirty...I just went to check on a batch of guppy and Molly fry. To my horror, two were dead. One was a much older guppy fry that had been having swimming difficulties so was added in with the young fry. She had her head stuck in the plastic corner of the breeder box. As I took her out to dispose of her, I realized that she was still alive! Her back was bent badly and she was malnourished from being stuck in the position for up to four days. She desperately tried to swim and I felt absolutely terrible for causing so much pain. I quickly wrapped her up in a paper towel piece and smashed it with a television remote, I feel bad for doing this but there was nothing else nearby and I wanted to put her out of her misery as soon as possible. I then checked to make sure she was out of her misery and disposed of the paper towel. I just wanted to share this because I feel horrible for subjecting my fish to this. Word to the wise, cull earlier to end suffering. If I had known this would happen I would've done so myself. :( anyway, my other fish seemed fine and I fed them all. My two Molly females suddenly circled each other for a good ten seconds, weaving a tight circle and nipping at each other's bodies until one backed down. They are both female, any ideas on this behavior? I have never seen it before.
 
I've enjoyed reading everyone's posts and looking at the pictures in this thread. I figured I'd hop in and introduce myself :)

I used to do a lot more fish keeping, but when we moved a couple of years ago I had to cut way back. I rehomed my beautiful, very large butterfly koi and sold off my pond parts and I had to rehome my large fancy goldfish as well. When we got settled in at our new house, I set up a small tropical community in my 15 gallon tank. It currently houses 5 neon tetras, 2 flame tetras, 1 red eyed tetra and 2 black mystery snails. Recently I also set up a nano tank as well (mostly out of necessity). I purchased myself some orange Sakura shrimp for Christmas with the intention of putting them in the 15 gallon to act as a clean up crew. When they were delivered, they were SO beautiful, and smaller than expected, so I set them up in my 3 gallon nano tank so they could grow a bit longer in peace. They've been in there for a couple of weeks and I already have gobs of shrimp fry (or are they larvae?) swimming around. I'm considering leaving them in the nano and maybe adding some Thai micro crabs for a little variety :)
I also want to set my 55 back up and get a couple of fancy goldies going in it again, but that'll have to wait until I can get around to it :/

I'll try to grab some pictures of my little tanks to share at some point today!

Fish keeping gets so addictive, sounds like you are getting back in. I would enjoy some pictures of your shrimp as I've never kept any.
 
Thank you! I'll share some shrimp pics as soon as I get off work. They're about .5" long right now, but I think (if I'm remembering correctly) they grow to about 1".
 
FINALLY picked up a new light for DD's 75, which means no more musical light fixtures (had taken one of the 36" off my 125 and put it over DS's 75 so I could put the light from his tank over DD's) -- which also means I am now ready to re-plant both DD's 75 and my 125 and get them back up to the beautiful planted tanks they used to be!!!! Now the fun of trying to find the plants I want begins - while many shops have started carrying a better selection of live plants it can still be a frustrating process to accumulate all you want (thank goodness for the B/S/T areas on fish forums) - darn, guess that means I will "have" to spend the next several weekends making a circuit of all my favorite shops. On the upside, once I get them going again the supply at at least one of those shops will be better since they always buy my trimmings.

I had to laugh, ended up picking up an LED fixture, and the darn thing came with a remote control -- for a light fixture, totally wasted on me, though, since I run the planted tanks on timers so no using the clicker. Fish stuff sure has come a LONG way even in just the 30+ years I've been at it.........
 
You could try looking for your plants on aquarticarts.com. I order from them a lot. They've got a pretty decent selection and the owners are super nice. They ship fast too :)

Welcome! In my opinion, it is always best to fill tanks with live plants and "live rocks", pretty much real rocks. It's always fun to play around with ratios of plants and hides. In such a large tank, I'd recommend a few Marimo mossballs if you plan on keeping fish for breeding, shrimp, or algae eaters. The mossballs five shelter to fry, small shrimp/crayfish, and grow enough algae to feed small algae-eating fish. Java moss is also ideal. As for fish, what are you thinking of keeping? It's great to be able to have such a large tank, the possibilities are endless! I often keep African Dwarf Frogs and think that they may be good in a tank that size but will sometimes be picked on by cichlids or large fish such as Angels. Keep us updated on your tank stocking!
