Ordered 3 batches off ebay 2 marans 1 guinea....no luck with either lost over 90% ...but alot on ebay is a rip if in state when weather warms up u might have better results

Still looking for Marans and guineas:(

I've ordered about 6 different times and all but one order hatched out well. It depends on the packing of the eggs and the mailman. I have a good mailman and only order from what I feel are people with good track records. I was feeling poorly about my 75% hatch rate until I started to hear about other peoples problems.

I wouldn't order now for the next few months as the cold would kill them off. The latest I have ordered was the first of December during a warm spell from a guy in Kentucky.

Thanks Friar! I'll check it out...The guy I got them from said he only sells pairs but I think I may be able to get a drake...Unless they aren't as hard to sell as roosters...Then I'll have to buy a pair, which is no problem either.

Ms. Lewis Rich :

I just called down to the farm and asked that they put a light in coop. There is a heated water base inside and they just put a 100 watt bulb inside, my 2 Marans roosters combs were so frost bitten 2 weeks ago I hope it helps, I keep thinking of all the poor dogs left outside in the cold in dog houses with no heat It is going to be so cold the next couple days,Poor animals.
My spoiled gang are in my bed under the covers , they have never been cold a day in their lives.
Is anyone else putting any extra heat in coops? They say it has not been as cold as it's going to get for 2 years.

I'll just be going on a hope and a prayer for mine because the coop has no electric and it is too far from the house to run any. I did however put all, but the ones in the little coop/run thing, in the big house. So far no one but LucyToo(my black Cochin bantam) is harassing the ones from the doghouse coop.

Can't wait to get some good weather to be able to fence in and build the rest of the coops and Ron said he was going to help me...Reckon he's a sweetheart after all.

I lost a chicken last night, Blondie a Buff Orpington. I assume she froze to death. She got behind the feed can to lay her egg and got stuck back there and I found her wedged against the can. She and several other chickens were in one half of the coop that didn't have a heat lamp on. Everyone is on one side today with the heat lamp on.

It is a shame as she was one of my favorites. She liked to climb in my lap and rub her neck all over me. I may buy an incubator and try to hatch her egg.

Ok, one last post tonight ....

not a good pic... but this is the "substitute mama" I made for the chicks - they seem to be happy enough with it.
