Heya -

Burkesville area is beautiful - I try to get down there a couple of times a month, at least. I live about 15 miles north of Burkesville. The drive between me and there is absolutely gorgeous.

If ya want to come see chickens before ya buy em, you can visit me - I have egg laying large breeds, and bantams (oegb, and cochins) and some spitzhaubens (they are really spazzy!! LOL but funny). (I have 4 chicken coops - and planning more next spring if I can talk hubby into it, LOL).

Where are ya moving from? We moved down here a little over a year ago from Michigan.

Peace -
Meri

Made it through the night with no chicken losses - I hope we fixed the problem. I am thinking if it WAS a weasel, it would have gone back last night - even if I made the coop safe from coons.

I did have something (probably that coon) out there, though, because where I buried Aretha (the kids didn't bury her deep, I guess - I shouldn't leave such things to teens.) was dug up and her body is gone.

I was worried, because we went out to dinner with friends, and had to take off before almost dark - when the chickens go inside for the night - so they stayed "freerange" until about 8:30. They were all inside the coop - just the door was open. I left lights on in and outside the coop, and the dogs were outside so they could chase off anything that made a ruckus.

The guineas slept inside the coop last night, too - I figured any extra protection from the noisemakers would alert me or the dogs to something.

I'll still be on alert for awhile. I'm thinking of getting a trap to put out at night, so I can catch the buggar and decorate the coop wall with his hide.

Maybe if I hang enough coon skins on the coop it'll tell the others to stay away (if it doesn't freak out the chickens, LOL.)

LOL I was so desperate about losing more chickens, I thought about hanging a St. Michael Medal on the coop last night, tee hee. Defeating the devil / defeating racoons - it's similar, right???

call me crazy!

Shelley I just happen to be lucky enough to have someone close here that will take really good care(as in spoil) of the chickens so she is usually the first person I think of when I need to cut back. Of course now that I have Meri addicted to Bantys I'll have to call her too. Since I only have 28 left now it gives me more room to add some of what I want next Spring. Been thinking, to keep it pure I might get a male BTW Jap instead of letting Terminator(BTB) breed the new girls. Then I can give folks some of the eggs to hatch.

Meri, Monday I will get to candle those eggs for the first time...I threw in a couple of golden Comet ones Layne got from the guy we bought the ducks from...Don't know if they'll do anything though as I had them in the fridge for a few days before I opened one and realized they were fertile...Big bullseye. I can't ever find it on my banty eggs for some reason, even ones I know are fertile. And I think one of Belles(partridge silkie) eggs are in there too, They'd be some odd looking chicks as Raoul has been getting her lately. BRxSilkie...hmmm.

Okay I think I covered everything for a while...Have a great day!!! Cindy

Cindy - if ya want that spare btw jap cockerel I got, let me know and he's yours. I was wondering what to do with him anyway, LOL.

I'd be happy to know he has a home with ya

ETA - LOL yeah, those WILL be weird looking babies - Raoul is a big boy - how'd he manage a silkie without crushing her?

Peace -

Hello fellow Kentuckians! I just registered and thought I'd check in. We just moved to Winchester almost exactly a year ago and are pretty new to chickens. We got our first bunch in April along with two ducks. We've done pretty well with them so far, only losing one duck. Anyways, hello and it's a pleasure to meet y'all.

Yea, we used to live there but we made a mistake and were renting a little house in North Lexington. Winchester sort of split the difference for Berea(my wife's fam) and Jackson and Northern KY (my fam). We just started getting our eggs about a week ago and are really excited about the girls doing such a good job. Where are you at? Thank you for the welcome!

Hello fellow C Ky person!! Another one of our fellow BYCers is in Berea, Bluedog420...He has lots of chickens and other poultry.

Meri: Well, Belle is a good size Silkie...About half the size of Raoul, as long as he doesn't step on her head again like he did when he first caught her it will be okay...Plus she is already learning from Bess on how to elude him so he doesn't get her too often. They just stay behind him as he tries to turn around to get them, it's really funny to watch. That Bess is a really smart girl!

No fair!! Mari beat me to the punch on the BTW jap!! My friend that i saved the other for ended up selling her hen, after she had told me to save one for her, then I lost one of my girls. I think that leaves me with 2 boys and 1 girl.

Yes there are a bunch of us Central KY banty addicts here... My advice to you is STAY FAR FAR AWAY!! Those little boogers are VERY addictive!

BTW- I'm in Columbia as well as chiknmama

Thanks for the welcome! Oh, I was lurking there for awhile before we got our birds. It actually inspired me to convert a fence into a huge chicken tractor. I know what you mean about an addiction, I haven't worked with Banties yet, I just have some sort of multi-colored laying hen. I'll have to show you guys the pics. I'm sort of thinking of getting some quail next since my area would be perfect for turning them loose on!
