Oh, btw - that dang duck did go and try to lay her egg in that hollow tree again, had to chase her out, so I put more rocks into it. It's a pain walking down there in the mud to get to the tree - naturally it is just the other side of the electric fence, so I have to go way around and down the hill to get to it.

Ducks are silly! I only found one egg today, and it was from one of the pekins. I found a nest of 9 day before yesterday, in that old washing machine frame that dad put out there. Found 2 in there yesterday, and none today

I hope the two girls just took the day off, and didn't move their nest completely!

Hey Meri, do any of the feed stores sell layer crumbles? Or is it just pellets and mash?

After eating that M&W stuff for the last year, my chickens loved the Day & Day stuff. The M&W stuff is basically corn powder - no lumps, no grains, just powder (which is partly why I mixed it with cracked corn, just for some texture). I think the chickens like the tiny bit of mollases in the Day & Day stuff.

The baby ducks will have the flock raiser mixed in til they are about 7 weeks old, at least, cause I have to finish up some already bought feed. I figure by then they'll be ready for big duckie food.

I really hope those call duck eggs hatch, I hear it is hard to hatch them, but that would be sweet if I had a bunch of call babies.

Day & Day will order the crumbles for you if you ask them to - but they generally only carry the pellets.

I figure to just add in some calcium source for the layers, I have a whole bag of oyster shells to toss out there for them.

I've sworn off cochins - love the way they look, hate to wait forever for them to lay an egg and not have ONE egg out of them the whole time I owned them - I sold all of the cochins I had.

I'm just sticking to dual purpose now. and duckies

you said it !!!

I cant wait to get out to Sano to sell of half of the duckies I have now - then I'll pare it down even further once I figure out which ones I want to keep. Cutting it in half will help, though.

So far I have 7 call duck eggs with veining (in two batches) and 8 more I just set on Friday - too early to tell on those, of course.

Even if I have half of them hatch I'll be a happy camper.

These are all from the blue pair and the kahki girl, I didn't get any viable eggs from the splash pair before Toby killed them

The splash girl laid eggs but they were all soft shelled.

Mine had layer mash (not crumbles, but layer ration, anyway) and they still never laid an egg - and I saw them mating, so I don't know why I never got an egg out of any of them.

I think I just wasn't meant to have cochins.
