Kentucky people

When we finally closed on our property here, we went back to Michigan and just across the state line we stopped for a break at a rest area. A guy was walking into the building in front of us about 5 feet ahead - he walked in and actually tried to pull the (self closing) door shut behind him in our face.

We knew we were "home".

The YMCA thing is nothing unusual, unfortunately. That stuff happens every single week. The Kendall school thing (the guy who sort of went crazy on them) - Kendall is right across from the college I worked at (and my oldest son still works at) and my son lives downtown (yuck). We lived up the hill - maybe a mile from downtown - but downtown enough for me. The violence started out being centered on the southeast side, but by the time we moved it had crept into our neighborhood, too.

I used to take my middle son to work over on the southeast side, and I'd be waiting for him in the parking lot after work and hear gunshots all the time. They even blew up one of the police trailers (for having a police force in the main thick of things, they would pull trailers in as temp bases of operation.) - no cops were in it at the time.

When my husband bought that house years and years ago, the neighborhood was all older folks who owned their homes - but they got old and died or were sent to homes, and their kids sold the houses to slum lords. Over half of the houses in our neighborhood (two block area with a cul de sac) were empty. Boarded up and havens for drugs and bored teens.

Both of my younger boys want to move back there - it's where their friends live

I tell them they are out of their minds and there is no future in Michigan at all. I guess they'll have to learn it for themselves.

I cannot begin to tell you all of the stuff that goes on up there. It's depressing just writing it all down. No wonder I had high blood pressure at the age of 40.

Well I left Michigan in 1979 and moved to California, then came here in 1993. I have been home to visit family a few times since then, even drove through my old neighborhood that I grew up in.

What was once a nice neighborhood of single family homes and neighbors that looked out for each other has turned to a real mess. My own family tells me how bad everything is up there. My sister lives in Clinton Township and they want to move, my twin brother lives in Breckenridge and he and his wife plan to move to the Upper Pennisula when she retires from the VA.

My other brothers have moved away from the city as well. They all tell me to stay down here. The good thing is that it is too far for them to drop in unnanounced!

Much as I want to move back to Michigan and be with the family, I don't intend on making that move until it's time to plant me in the ground permanently!

Really!! It's supposed to be gorgeous!! And I have a kid home from school sick

At least you are at home. I have to work 12 hours. Is the sun even out? I will not know.

Hopefully tomorrow will be pretty. I finally get to work some overtime to get more $$ for chickie stuff, and it is pretty. And this is the weekend for the exotic animal sale in cookville tn. I really want to go.

Man, every time I figure I can cull or sell and make room - I realize that I need another coop

I wonder if I can talk hubby into building "just one more"

By this fall I'll have three flocks of chickens (that I want to keep seperate, and I can do it, but it'll be tight) plus - I got the chicks that I hatch (and buy) so I need room for all of those while they're growing out a bit.... plus ducks....

With the problems getting chicks right now at the hatcheries, I am wondering how much I can get out of those chicks I ordered, though - Darryll, how much were you planning to sell for (just out of curiosity, if ya don't mind sharing

Granted a lot of them will be males, but even males are good for eating, I guess.

I was looking at Shrink Bags today, and I can get 200 bags for about 56 bucks - plus shipping. I may go another route on that item, I guess, sounds like a lot for packaging meat to freeze it - but maybe it isn't that much, I have to explore other options, first, I guess.

It sounds really windy out there - I don't think it was that bad when I did chores this morning - I have to go out soon to check eggs, so I guess I'll find out how bad it is.

It is really windy out there! I'm sure the temps have dropped also! I know I'm freezing in here!!

I wouldn't charge more for the chicks than what you know you can get, unless you want to get stuck with a bunch of unwanted ones to feed! @ $1 each, you should only have to take them once or twice, and if there are any left each week, you could always raise the price the next week, by $.50-$1.

And you really don't need a 'coop' for the ducks, they won't use it unless you have them trained to anyway. You could always keep some in with your chickens, too, since they wouldn't cross-breed. Ducks are very cold hardy, and won't go into shelter unless they are trained or it's super wet/nasty outside.
