Yeah, I wonder how you would tell if it were a mule or not.

I don't think you could, unless you were 'up' on the colors. I would just tell people flat out that they were mules. I wonder if they would be all the same sex? Isn't that how donkey/horse mules work? The babies are always the same sex?

Speaking of mules, have your donkeys ever tried to breed your mare? Or is she too big? I know a palamino mule is a hot ticket item, and with your donkey colors, and horse color, it would be a possibility?

Mules can be either sex, they are just infertile.

Not tried to breed with old Sassy - but TeaCake sure does look up her butt whenever she lifts her tail - now THAT is optimism

He's half her size - could probably walk under her tummy without ducking.

Sass is sterile, anyway - she wasn't bred early enough - and if ya don't breed a horse by the time they're a certain age, they have fertility problems. (so I've been told).

The guy who had her before us tried to breed her five or six times - never did "take".

Have you had her checked by a competent Horse Vet? They can do tests to see if she really is infertile, or if there is a physical problem that has prevented her from taking when bred. I know that a couple of years ago they discovered that alot of the Thoroughbred Mares were either aborting their foals or having still births because of a bug, I think it was the Gypsy Moth and the Black Walnut trees. The mares were browsing on the leaves with the moth eggs on them causing the problem. Once they treated the mares, they were able to successfully produce live foals.

FrChuck- You were right they were very nice large females and they did get the humpback wahle look. (I couldn't figure out how to describe it!) I have water srite and a bubbler but I proably need to get a different filter. It has the one on top and I don't think its real good. Hey I appreciate the help,Thanks

I'm not really looking for a foal out of her anyway - she's about 13 years old, now. She also has hip problems, and I doubt she could carry the foal to term. She isn't even ridden anymore - she just eats hay and gets scratchies.

She is good for watching over the baby donkeys though (even though the other donkeys do this too) Sassy is bigger and looks more intimidating to a dog than the donkeys do. Butters still hangs out with Sassy, it's funny - they look like the Odd Couple.
