That's a really nice coop/pen!! Mine looks like a shack built under a leanto... Your chickies are precious!!!

ETA: Just noticed the black chickie is probably actually a black sexlink girlie with those brown feathers mixed in, instead of Australorp as Australorp are solid black with a sheen and no color variation...Bet she is a sweetheart I've heard the sexlinks are nice calm natured girls. Meri had some BAs though if you were wanting one, don't know if she still does or not.
Take care, and congrats on your new coop and chickies, Cindy

Thanks! I didn't really think the black one looked right, but wasn't sure. Seems like there are so many variations of each kind. It's hard for this newbie to wrap her head around! I'm really not picky about breed as long as they're good natured and a good layer. Heck, I'll even take a so-so layer as long as they're good natured!

Nice coop!

hahaha......It looks better than my house! Sad but true...I keep waiting to get rich so I can build a house just like I want. Since that's not happening anytime soon I got hubby to make-over a playhouse for me to put chickens in. Doesn't seem quite right does it???

Nice coop!!
Are all of your chickens pullets? The barred rock looks light, like my cockerel. But maybe it is just the picture?

They're supposed to be. We'll see in a few weeks for sure though. My luck they're all roos! That lady probably saw me coming.
The Barred Rock in my husbands....he picked it out and named it Barbara (BARRed Rock=Barbara lol)

One pretty much tell tale sign of a BR girl is a good amount of black going up the front of the legs as chickies and teens...On a male they are mostly yellow with maybe a little black around the ankle but it usually goes away...The girls usually keep some black going up the front as they get older. And yes the girls have broader black bars and the males have broader white bars. Some can trick you til they grow a little though. BRs are really sweet chickens too. We had a male and female last year...Meri is the only one who has a product of their breeding and she is spoiled rotten.
Not very good photos cause taken with phone cam but this was my daughters BR Raoul(the daddy to Meris BR named BC)... She is giving him his daily massage...And yes it was daily. We really miss both Raoul and Bess.
Yep the spoiled roo is sleeping:

He was getting heavy at the other angle so she shifted him to lay across and he went back to sleep:

Still sleeping, slept there about 30 minutes, she's telling little brother not to wake him:

Here is a pic of Bess the momma to BC(she was killed in a dog attack), she LOVED grapes:

She is so pretty - and fat!

yes, she has joined the ranks of the Fat Girls.

for those who don't know, BC stands for Bad Chick (she was naughty as a brooding baby - funny naughty, not evil naughty) now it stands for Baby Chick - cause she's a sweety. Barred Rocks certainly have that "naughty" personality - they are so funny. No shy chicks in that breed.

Woo Hoo...another silkie went broody and the standard white cochin hen started setting on the 3rd...Can't wait to see em...The nekked neck chick's are so cute...I still don't know what color they are gonna be...they look like barred rock right now...Time will tell...lol Peace
