Cool........ I made suet for the wild birds that visit my feeders but never thought to make some for the chickens...

Last year I bought them Flock Blocks - not all of them were interested, but the blocks are the size of horse/cattle mineral blocks and they sat on the ground and got wet and icky and meltd away. I figure with smaller ones I can hang them and keep them from being soaked in rain all winter.

Plus, if I find a flavor they like or dislike I can make more or less of that flavor.

The poor orps, cochins and barred rocks (and the bantams) are on lockdown for the winter - so no more freeranging for them until next spring sometime. I imagine they are not happy chickens with me right now. I need peace offerings

I also have a bunch of suet cake holders I had gotten last year (and never used) to hang in their runs for entertainment, so I can make small sized "flock blocks" to fit into those and keep em busy this winter. (plus if I hang it it may keep the mice and rats off them).

thigns I'm thinking of adding are - cracked corn, millet, other grains, sunflower seeds (shelled), peanut butter for a little flavor, some raisins...

anything else sound good that you guys would add?

eta - maybe some rolled oats/oatmeal

Its a good idea... Not to sound rude but why are they on lockdown for the winter? Yeah they are going to be mad, lol.

WOW why'd you guys move back to CA???? We moved from there when I was 15 and the only thing I EVER go back for is to visit my brothers. One owns a business with his partner in LA and the other two work for him. I was born and raised there til we moved to KY and never liked it and I never looked back, was always a barefooted country girl at heart, so I am home here.
BTW WELCOME TO THE FORUMS!!!!
Feel free to come visit Kentucky anytime, we all love to chat in here....

Got our package 2 days ago, sorry I kept forgetting to let you know. One loaf is almost gone, and hubby absolutely LOVES it!!! Thanks for the extra gift too it smells sooo good. And that salve will be put to good use here. Do you ever make lye soap? I used to have some that I used to clean my face with.... It balances out the oils in my face and and makes it smooth and blemish free. Best thing in my opinion to clean the face, above and beyond the marketed products.

corn meal, flour, and oats mix up well in lard. better not feed too much to them, too much fat is supposed to cause foot problems.

Cindy -- glad to hear you like the bread... I was worried it wouldn't ship well.... To make bar soap you have to use Sodium Hydroxide (lye). So yes, my soap is made with lye. The reason it is not on the ingredients list is you only put in enough lye to make the soponification process happen and when you're done there's no lye left.

I don't make lye heavy soap because it can cause skin irritations. I put different things in my soaps to help with scrubbing, moisturizing, etc, depending on the soap... I have a GREAT soap I make with Coffee and Coffee grinds to keep in the kitchen to get icky smells off your hands.

The beer soap is a great one for the face (that's the one I use) it is also good for oily hair (I make my son use it.... at 15 he has all those hormones and yucky boy smells going on)....

I can't live w/o the black salve.... When I found the recipe, I couldn't get the ingredients fast enough... I remember my Mom using it on boils and bee stings and I loved it... It's still a work in progress to get it to the consistency that I want but it works really good. You could even put it on animals....

They're my breeders, and I'm getting them ready to lay me some purebred eggs to hatch this winter so I can have older chicks come spring when everyone else has baby chicks. The mixed "yard candy" flock is still out during the day, but my breeder flocks are locked up (they have a big run to play in, but it just isn't the same.) Plus, I have one buff orp hen who insists on trying to go AWOL (that's her name, btw, she is a pain in the butt to stick around the farm).

BabyMama is gonna be ticked at me again when she goes in to lay her egg tomorrow morning.

I checked this morning and had no eggs, so I went in there after I got back from town and there was her egg, and two other eggs - plus a quail egg!!
lau.gif
she found an old (probably really old
sickbyc.gif
) quail egg on the floor of the coop and put it up in that nest so she could add to her stash. Poor girl wants to hatch eggs so badly!!

I'd be happy to give her some of the purebred eggs to hatch, but I don't want her to hatch the mutts. She's not sitting yet, but she is gathering. If she's like Jr. (Her mama) she'll get about 7 of them before actually sitting. But boy does she get angry when her stash is gone.

I think I'd better start saving her some purebred eggs to sit on, or else she'll be off hiding her eggs on me like Jr. does. I wonder how many full sized eggs she can handle sitting on? maybe 4 or 5 at most - but will she sit on that many or will she keep laying til it fits her idea of "enough"? I may have to put her into the closed coop with my purebreds so she can gather her own eggs (and not go hiding them somewhere.) I'd hate to have her setting in the barn and have those rats get to her nest.

silly chicken.

Well, I forgot to tell you a story that amazed my hubby yesterday. I forgot to lock the coop up Wednesday night... Usully when I forget they are out and about by daylight the next day. Well I kept looking out back yesterday morning and no chickens wandering their run... I wondered what was up, and was half afraid to go check for fear of what I'd find. It got on 11:00 and still no girls so I mustered the courage to walk back there. Cleo had died in the night right inside the hatch under the nestbox, and the other 8 girls were surrounding her in a circle of protection not budging until I reached in among them and picked her up to remove her. Then they all relaxed some and went out into the run to eat and drink... But it was a very quiet morning in the run, no chit chatting like they usually do. I think they were all mourning her death. I believe they'd been around her all night. I don't think any of them had perched that night. Hubby was very impressed when I told him, chickens aren't as dumb as some uneducated folks think they are. I am just glad I didn't find a raccoon massacre, that is what I was afraid of.

Finally! I've got a chance to sit down

I was busy today making a hoop house out of some hog panels. I've almost got it done, just need to get some roosts in there and something to latch the door with, then cover it all with a tarp, and it will be all done...just add chickens!

My brand-new drill was being a pita, but I think I figured out the problem. I'm thinking I wasn't holding my drill exactly straight? So it was rounding out the ends of the screws, instead of driving them in

But I got it figured out finally

I finally talked dad into taking his rabbit to sell, so now the only rabbit here is ours

Cris fell in love with a young dutch bunny (don't even know if it is male or female, and don't really care
big_smile.png
). It's hanging out with the guinea pigs right now, and they all seem to be getting along well. I'm thinking that as long as there is GP and bunny food both in their cage (which is plenty big enough for the 3 of them atm), then they should be fine. I might just feed them all bunny food, then just make sure Debbie and April get their daily Vit. C tablets, that's basically the only difference in their feed.
