Kentucky people

I have some quail eggs in my bator, but they aren't really the ones you would want to turn lose. They are the white texas A&M, and I have some buttons as well. You might want to check with the F&W people first, you might not be able to turn them lose. I am sure you woud need a native breed, and probably a permit as well. Buttons are good pets, though. I was told they are about the size of a parakeet at full size. Should be interesting! I got 20 eggs, and am kinda hoping they don't all hatch. What would I do with so many? I just wanted a couple for pets for my little boy!

Good luck with them! I was thinking about having my hens sit on some pheasant eggs until they hatched. The land is perfect for turning them loose on, good ground cover and I wouldn't have to bush hog it nearly as much. We'll probably try out some buttons when the baby gets a little older, he's really taken a liking to animals of all kinds and he'd really learn something from raising a few buttons.

Central KY seems to be the place to be! Meri I live in green CO. so I am not to far from Columbia. Maybe Ill have to swing by sometime. Do you have any updated pics of your Spitzhauben? Maybe I can buy a few eggs off of you in the spring lol.

I have a couple of pics on the photo site --

There are more than just chickens here, LOL lots of pics of the farm and the donkeys and the cow (we just took her to be butchered thursday). The newer pics of the spitz's are on either the first page or the second - there are only a couple of them.

My spitz's are not as nice as some I've seen. I don't know where the guy got them who I got them from, but they are changing as they get older, so maybe they'll "look right" by the time they are done. Their top knots don't look right - the one does, but the others are floppy. You can just have some eggs, if ya want to try them out - when they start to lay, that is. I'll need to see if they are fertile, anyway

I would love to find some that are more to type - not sure where to go looking. They are the most spastic chickens I've ever seen, though, LOL. They hate to be cooped up and they will steal a piece of bread right out of your hand before ya have a chance to share it among the other chickens, :o They are NOT shy chickens.

A friend tried to get me over to Cow Days, but I was too busy to go. So I haven't been through Greensburg since I had to go take my kid to the bus station in E-town last Janurary, LOL. It isn't far, though.

Glad to find more folks close by. Always good to have chicken swapping prospects,

ETA - yeah, stop by anytime, just PM and I'll give ya directions, and my phoen number so you can call.

Peace -

I've been trying to re-arrange my sewing room - I got a new freezer (big sucker) and it had to go in there, so now I have two freezers two sewing machines, and a LOT of "my" stuff that doesn't fit anywhere in the rest of the house. Plus, I need to arrange it so I can put a baby playpen in the middle of the room for brooding. It isn't THAT big of a room,

Oh, and I also have a huge snake tank (4 foot long) that I really don't have a place for!! I have another snake (my previous snake died on me this last summer) and so I am trying to fit that in there, too. Right now it is on top of the sewing machine that I don't use, LOL it hangs over the ends, though, so it really isn't safe there. The long table I had it on before has been re-used for something else, I may have to steal it back for the tank.

But - I am not gonna touch it anymore tonight. I'll just sleep on it and figure out how to get stuff moved some more tomorrow.

Peace -

Cindy said >>>>> Meri, Monday I will get to candle those eggs for the first time...I threw in a couple of golden Comet ones Layne got from the guy we bought the ducks from...Don't know if they'll do anything though as I had them in the fridge for a few days before I opened one and realized they were fertile...Big bullseye. I can't ever find it on my banty eggs for some reason, even ones I know are fertile. And I think one of Belles(partridge silkie) eggs are in there too, They'd be some odd looking chicks as Raoul has been getting her lately. BRxSilkie...hmmm <<<<<<<<<<

Cool, I'll be waiting to see how they do. Hope they are fertile. You know what? I think one of my hens may be a gold comet/red sex link, whatever they call em.

I call her Miss Piggy - she has white legs - do comets have white legs? She is pretty, anyway. Sweet chicken, and yes, she earned her name

btw - if any of you new folks want three roosters (or even one, LOL ) I got some that need homes!!!

I really don't want to have to kill those boys. My sister was bummed at me today cause I said I might have to, and she wants Attila - but she can't have chickens where she lives.

Maybe I ought to just drive around town with a big sign on my truck that says FREE ROOSTERS!!!! and see if anyone stops me, LOL.

Can't give the stoopid things away.... grumble grumble, gnash teeth, grumble some more......

Peace -
Meri

I just really hope I hatch any of them. I have had 2 hatches in a row that were major flops!! The first was last week, only 1 egg, and it was full term and did not hatch. I have another that is due on Monday, with 2 eggs, and they both look like they are quitters, around day 12-14. Idk what I am doing wrong!! I hope I don't mess up the quail eggs too. I paid a total of 25 bucks for them!!

Oh btw, I was thinkin of givin some buttons to my sisters' kids for christmas, if I get too many...I'm sure they will LOVE me for that!!

I've got a 50 Gal fish aquarium up on an old admiral TV set, so I know where you're coming from on places to put those things. I've got some old tetras that have managed to survive in there for I'd say 3 or 4 years, tough little fish. If anyone wants a good kids pet, we've got a bunch of mollies in there breeding like crazy, free to a good home too! Those roosters are so tempting, my hens won't roost at night and I have to go out there and put them away every evening. I hear roosters will control that. Just need to convince the wife, she hates em. Maybe I should get her to go and collect the chickens every night, that might change things...
