Yeah, or since I have so many, we'll just get a cart, and some itty bitty harnesses, and have them pull us around!!!

How are the pigeons doing shelley? Mine hear are enjoying the extra nest boxes lol.

Oh they are doing great! I love the capuchines!

They have been squabling with dad's 'rooster' pigeon, or at least that's which one I think is doing it, but he is the instigator. He doesn't want any of the others to come near his babies, or especially his woman! Dad is trying to be gready, and keep them all, but I told him I had aready told my friend she could have some. He says he's gonna keep them a while, and see which ones pair up, before he gives her any. I told him it's not like he needs them all, they will have babies!!

Ungrateful man, if it weren't for me being on the PC all the time, he wouldn't have gotten any!

Is there any way to tell which are males or females? The ones we had when I was younger seemed like they had different colored ceres, but these all look the same, as far as the ceres is concerned. (cere is what I know it's called for parakeets, might be different in pigeons!)

Sexing pigeons is fun! (yeah right) Sometimes, males have thicker necks and bigger heads. But usually you have to tell by behavior. Males strut, coo, and puff up their necks. ...but sometimes females will too. ultimately the ones on the bottum (if you know what I mean) are hens...but that doesnt always work either. Oh wait, the best is when they lay 2 eggs and they hatch lol. Although I have had two hens lay fertile eggs and raise them lol.

Thank you so much for making the trip! Coco is doing great so far, he played with maggie outside until way after dark. He did a little fetching and had a great time when we called him inside. I've never seen a dog drink so much water, I guess it shows how hard he plays.

I got to watch Blue a little bit later on and he seems a little overwhelmed having all of those girls to himself! They all took off and hid in the tractor when I let him loose in there so he was on his own for awhile. I think the pecking order is going to take awhile. He kept trying to come up and say hello to the girls but they kept running him off. He's just as good natured as you said he was. I love that chicken transporter, we got a kick out of that

LOL He'll probably be corraling them soon enough. He is pretty easy going - the only chicken he didn't get along with was this one hen, who used to attack the chicks when they were smaller - so I guess it was paybacks.

LOL Yeah, that box was funny - Cindy's husband gave it to me to transport Nana home. I figured I'd better hang onto it for other chickens,

Glad you like him -

Well, my chickens have learned that they can get under the house if they go into the backyard.

That can't be good.

Spazz (the slw) seems to be fitting in great with George and his girls. She still stays a bit to herself, but she is out free ranging and coming up for treats and she does hang with them some. Had a hard time convincing her to go back inside last night - she was the last chicken out. She finally did go in, but I was getting worried she'd be sleeping in a tree or something. I don't think I'll have as much trouble tonight now that she knows she'll get to come out again in the morning.

I ended up putting Nana back into the banty coop. She still seems a bit overwhelmed at the other cochins. Maybe once I get some babies and they are larger they can all go in at the same time. I'll just let Nana "take care of them" til they are bigger.

I might be getting some standard cochin eggs to try hatching. That'll be cool having them all waddling around the yard next spring. Do you think I can put the standards and the bantam cochins in the same cell? or would it be better to keep em seperate? They probably won't be that big until spring, anyway, and that is when I get to shuffle birds again - the oeg banties go into the breeding cells, and the bigger chickens go into the main coop. I am planning to put the cochins in the main coop next spring, so I can let them out to free range up top (rather than have them go straight out into the dirt and mud in the pasture - at least I'll have a slim chance of keeping them from being covered in muck).

I only have the banties up top now because it is easier to heat the main coop and they are smaller. Hubby likes them up there, because they aren't as loud as the bigger ones - but with all the extra roos gone, it isn't that loud anymore, anyway. George will get going some, and Hoss is starting to crow a lot, LOL, the banties crow more than any of them - but it's that higher pitched thing.

Hubby doesn't know it yet, but once he gets power to the tack barn, it might be turned into my brooder barn

It is always warm and dry in there, so it'd be perfect. All I'll need is enough space for the play pen, the rest can still be used for storage.

We're doing pretty good on the corral so far - we've got the hard part done, just need to set some more posts and finish the fencing, then put that roof on the back. We ended up building an 8 foot gate on the side, so we can move animals from pasture to pasture to corral if necesary. They'll all be inter-connected. We're practically doubling the size of the corral - we're going out another 10 foot out the back of the barn and all across to the other side of the corral. If I knew what hubby did with the calculator I could tell ya how much we're actually adding on.

I expect to hear about the cow any day early this week. We asked them to hang her for 10 days rather than the standard 7. I'm looking forward to seeing how she will taste once we get some meat from her. Oh, reminds me, I'd better turn on the other freezer today, in case we have overflow from the big freezer.

I really have to get that room in order, too - or we'll have a hard time climbing over all my books piled on the floor to get the meat in.

Well, hungry - gonna see if I can find something for breakfast.

Back in a bit -

Thanks for the update on Coco...I was wondering how he did overnight. Layne cried off and on, on the way home, so Cortni sang some of his favorite songs for him to keep his mind off of Coco. I forgot to bring his rubber tire toy too so when I get a non busy day I'll box it and send it to you...He loves to play tug of war with it and will literally shove it in your hand so you'll pull on it.

LOL...Hubby always said he drinks like a horse. We were going to get a pad to put under the water bowl but never got around to it.

BTW: That little store did have some great food...We ate supper there and had the special...Smoked sausage and kraut, green beans and cornbread. We also got some fried okra(looks like they bread it) and those cheese balls(pepperjack) for appetizers. Layne only got the home fries, he doesn't eat much. Then of course we had to buy some of the homemade candies and fudge.

That box has held some humor for all of us with our chickens...It has come in handy. I also got a giggle out of the bag that the guy we got our ducks from used to put my little black silkies in(last minute purchase). Layne saw me holding a Wendy's bag while I was talking to the guy and asked what was in it...I said "chicken nuggets!"...Of course Layne is so analytical he didn't see the humor in it until we were in the truck and I had to explain it to him.

GOTTA LOVE HIM!!

Oh Shelley -

If I do get those cochin eggs, I'll grab some of your dad's slw eggs, too, so I can have more in the bator than just twelve cochin eggs. I'd rather brood them all at once than to be brooding all winter, LOL.

Not sure if I'll be getting them or not - waiting to hear from the person who has them.

It'll work out good, too, since they'll all be standard size baby chickens, the baby banties won't be smooshed that way.

Peace -
Meri

Meri...I wouldn't house the lg and banty Cochins together at least not the large male if there are going to be banty females...Pouf, the one I gave to bluedog, is probably larger than Raoul and he would try to mount my dutches and Jap...I was so afraid he'd squish them and he probably would have if I hadn't given him away before he was full grown. JMO...Good luck with the eggs and hope your first batch hatches okay for you. LMK, Cindy
