Well after 3 days of terramyacin, Raoul and Little Man are getting their crows back...But a couple of the others are a little girgly/sneezy still so am going to continue with Tylan for 3 more days. Little Man seemed so proud to get most of his crow back that he flew up on the gate and crowed over and over, then he jumped down and tried to spar with Terminator to show him he was still top cock. Then of course the real top cock(Raoul) came over and broke up their little spat.

Ron took Layne and his buddy to a UK game tonight so I'm on my own for supper. Ate a sandwich. Felt good to get a break from cooking for a night, besides I forgot to take out some meat.

I got tickled at Sally(Laynes self blue Cochin bantam) tonight. I went out to wait for everyone to go into the coop so I could lock them up and Bandaid was taking her sweet time as was the Millie trio. Well, Sally was obviously ready to go to bed because she kept coming out of the coop, running up to me then running back to the coop. She did it about 3-4 times. So after everyone else went in I scooped up the two BTWJs and put them in and locked up.

Oh yeah, the BTWJs are another story. They don't go into the coop on their own. I have spoiled them and got them into the habit of this....They fly on top of the small coop and sit together and wait. Then I stand in front of them and scoop them against my chest and cuddle them for a minute or two then I have to walk them to the coop and put them in the door and they just go to their sleeping spot in there. No joke, these two birds are rotten....

That's funny... My silkie babies will go in there tractor, but they sit right in the doorway. I always have to bump them in the rest of the way!! Cristian takes advantage of it and goes and scoops one up! He says these are his favorite chickens. He saw a pic of a frizzle yesterday! OMG, he just HAS TO have one!! He also likes the polish, maybe I'll get some frizzle polixh chickens, kill two birds with one stone, so to speak!

Just realized which ones you were talking about!!

I can't believe those two are so tame! They were a bunch of crazy chickens when I had them!! It was funny watching my dad crawl around in their 3'x8' tractor trying to catch the right ones!!

Thought about leaving him in there for a while, but I was nice and let him out

Oh they won't come near me during the day unless I have a handful of treat. But at bedtime they must like the warm cuddling or something...Or they're just too lazy to put theirselves to bed being that I accomodate them so well.

I can part with the red pyle hen, and a couple of bbred hens without roos, but I want to have some hens to go with the roos to sell or swap, too. I am seriously thinking of cutting back to just a few types of chickens. (easier said than done,

) I want the cochins, both large and small, and the layers and my meaties, and the japs. That's 5 groups, and I have way more than that right now. I really need to cut back, though, or else I'll end up with a bunch of mutts that no one wants. I need to be brutal, I'm afraid, and it'll be harder on me than on the chickens, I'm sure. Chickens will be happy anywhere they can get a treat

I sort of went nuts on the chickens this summer - got any chicken that was cheap or looked fun. I went way overboard, and need to get it together, I guess. I'm even considering getting rid of all the spitz boys, and not even trying to breed those. They are cute and WAY funny, but they are another breed to worry about, and I seriously will be so busy in a short while, I need to simplify things.

Cochins are hard to find - expecially nice ones, so I'll definately breed those. I like how my cochins are very fluffy, major foot feathering, good quality chickies.

I'd like to avoid having to build another coop if I can - not because of the time factor, only, I'd like to stop spending so much on building materials

Heck, I got four coops, now, I need to try to make those work before I go building more. I'm thinking if I put the bantam cochins into the main coop, I can put in a brooder area in there, maybe. Hang the brooder cages, since the banty cochins aren't gonna be flying around very high up. The main coop is more tight, anyway - less chance of a big breeze getting to the babies.

Well, we got the rake and baler home today, hubby already started to rake the field. Got to get it baled by Wednesday night in case it rains Thursday like it says it is supposed to.

I still have to run back into town to get Sam - he had to stay after for a drivers ed class. I still have to cut that kid's hair, I'm trying to talk him into letting me take him to a salon that'll take his hair for Locks of Love - it is certainly long enough for that. He just isn't sure he wants it cut that short

LOL I stopped by the school today, and he was walking towards the truck (he had forgotten his ID that he needs to get into the class) hair blowing behind him in the breeze

and I told him if he'd grow a beard and moustache, he'd look just like Jesus. (Jesus in a pirate tshirt and jeans, of course,

)

Shelley, you saw Jon today - he is complaining he needs a haircut

, those two are polar opposites. Jon's hair isn't that long at all, IMO.

So, maybe next week I'll have the hay stuff done, and I can go get me some pigs. Had to put it off today - the corral still needs a couple hours work, because Sam was leveling ground in there the other day and he broke the pickaxe handle.

Well.... let me go read some more, and I may have more to post....

They are so pretty to watch, though.

My overly friendly ones are the black australorps -

they crack me up many times a day. They come running when they hear me walk out onto the porch, if I'm late getting to them with their treats, they come looking for me - in the house. When I'm out in the yard they wander along and "chatter" to me. They aren't afraid of the dogs at all, and will even climb over them to get to the treats.
They're hilarious.

Only chicken I have that really likes cuddling, though, is Nana. She's still my cuddle baby.

I would so notice!! I don't have any roosters with any color on them, besides Charlie, and he is a lot bigger than those!!

I'll try to answer some of these questions...I was one of the unfortunate people who also bought birds from the same man, but mine were rehomed yesterday

The diseases were diagnosed through a necropsy performed by UK http://www.lddc.uky.edu/index.asp so we are sure of the diagnosis. I've spoken with a man who is in charge of the avian research department and this is what I've learned...

*Avian leukosis is not specific to any particular region and it's not uncommon. Some birds can have some natural resistance or immunity but once exposed they will be carriers and shedders of the illness. Those that are affected with the disease develop aggressive cancer and tumors that spread throughout the body and manifest outwardly as skin lesions.

*The eggs are safe to eat although production may be negatively affected in infected birds.

*The meat is safe to eat unless during processing you discover a bird with skin lesions.

*IC is spread fairly easily and has a wide range of symptoms. Eggs are safe to consume and IC is considered a common, chronic ailment.

If these chickens are being spread around Kentucky and other places then we all should be on the look out. Several of my chickens are from Tenn as eggs.

What do the lesions look like? How do you tell the difference between them and feather picking wounds? I have one roo with more missing feathers than the other four and think I need to look him over more closely.

I have taken several college classes on etiology of diseases (human) and my morbid curiosity has been aroused. I'm also a bit of a worry wart.

Also I think that direct sunlight would help break down the viral DNA in a chicken run. But only on the surface and how long it would take and the time of year could be factors.​
