This girl has lost alot of weight and she is still sitting tight if these eggs don't hatch I will be heart broken if she does not end up with ANYTHING! So I will keep you updated. Would 3 weeks be too old?

Cindy, I have to tell ya - that little (little???) barred rock is a naughty girl!!!

She keeps scratching up the pad I have in the cage. I put it back, and she watches me walk away, then runs over and scratches it back up again

. Then looks at me across the room as if to ask me what I'm gonna do about it.

She does remind me of Miss Celie - she is a naughty girl, too. Not Bad, just naughty - in an amusing way.

Looks like she's going to keep you on your toes...Congrats on the babies so far.

I had to take away Belles babies and eggs tonight. The Brilkie was stuck to her and I had to pull out a few of Belles feathers to get it loose that is what happened to the other chick that died. It was VERY weak when I brought it in the house. Layne had already headed up with the other two babies to put them in with the Serama(they are Japs and the same size as the Serama at a few days old). I also grabbed the eggs since they were due 3 days ago. One was pipped prematurely by her or the Brilkie so it stopped developing, another I accidentally crushed in my pocket but it hadn't developed at all(Thank Goodness), and the last still had movement so I put it in the hatcher because it looks to have pipped the air cell.
The Brilkie had some really labored breathing and after closer inspection it had a string of Belles feathers wrapped around it's wing and then around the upper part of it's body. No wonder it couldn't breath...She still has lots of swelling on the upper joint area of the wing the feathers were wrapped around and it is dragging...I don't know if it's broke or if its from the circulation being cut off but I just left it. The string of feathers was pretty tight.
After getting the baby warm and dropping little bits of vitamin water in the Brilkies beak I then moved it over to the waterer since it was holding its head up by itself and it would protest when I moved it. After dipping its beak in the water a few times it started to drink on its own. Now it is slowly walking back and forth from the food to the water eating and drinking so hopefully it'll be okay.

Well that is my excitement for the day...Oh yeah and no eggs today

Take care, Cindy

Hi all.

Just another warning about hawks. I had one of my big girls get hit by a small hawk which took out a bunch of feathers on her underside but my girl was too big for the hawk and got away.

I heard the squak and went outside in time to scare the hawk off. It wasn't a red tail but the wing span was about two feet. Probably the same hawk I saw a couple of weeks ago with the dove.

I looked my girls over and didn't find any harm to them other than the missing feathers. Whew. a close one!

Teresaann, Has Pop57 set you up with some chicks? My batch of meat chickens are 8 days old and have full wing feathers, just now getting tail feathers and are active. They are Deleware x Cornish and are slower growing than the cornish rocks.

The one here hasn't been back for some reason...Maybe my neighbor scared it off, he kind of watches out for my babies, he likes to sit in his backyard and watch them.

I been updating on the hatching thread, wasn't sure everyone on this thread wanted to read it.

I have 8 babies. 5 out of shelley's eggs and 3 cochins. I had 3 die in the shell while trying to hatch and one died after hatch because it's guts were hanging out. I've got probs with the humidity.
I bought a room humidifier, so I'm hoping the next batch won't be so bad.

The ones I have, though, are adorable and friendly!! When I got chicks at the feedstore this last spring, they were all scared of me every time I came anywhere near them - these guys (especially the first one hatched) run to the edge of the brooder and mob my hands when I put my hand in there. The only thing they don't like is the twice daily Butt Check (a couple had crusty butt, so I keep checking, now).

The cochins are odd colors - beautiful colors, but not ones I've seen before. two are sort of dark reddish tannish - like a deer color. The other one is blackish blue. I hope that one turns out to be a blue - I love the blues. One that died was a cochin - he had zipped in the night while I was sleeping, and the membrane had dried otu so much he got stuck. I was very bummed - I should have stayed awake a bit when I got up at 3:30 that morning and saw he was pipped. But no, I went back to bed, figuring he was doing ok.

The other eggs are still in there, but not doing aything, I think they're done. I'll leave it going until this evening, though, I haven't had any hatch or pip since yesterday early afternoon, so if nothing else happens by this evening, I'm gonna clean the bator out. I candled the eggs again and saw no movement at all.

One of them that hatched, a RIR mix, was very floppy for the first couple of days - I didn't think he'd do so good, but this morning he is on his feet more. maybe he just needed more time to get some strength into his legs.

I'm gonna go take pics as soon as I'm done posting this, so I can put them up on both threads. I figure no one wants to hear the whole story here, maybe, but everyone likes pics of baby chickies

be back in a few....

Remember to candle them before you give up on them...They may just be late hatchers.

If you read my post above from last night, the one egg that I took from Belle that was still good hatched today so your Jap count is up to 3 if you want them.

And to update on the Brilkie...It is doing very well today. Wing is still drooping a little and I haven't held it yet to see if the swelling has gone down but it's looking good. The Serama,BTW my mom named it Little One so now I have that name Little Bit and Little Man...Don't think I can handle many more littles. Anyway(sidetrack
roll.png
) back to the Serama...It keeps picking up the Brilkies wing like it's trying to put it in place, it's so funny because it follows the Brilkie around picking up the wing. The two little Japs in there with them are little pigs, every time they see someone head to the food bowl they run over and take over so now I'll have to move them to a larger food bowl so everyone can get some. Since Cheepers is in the big box with the Shelley chicks now, I'll use the plastic bin for the four downstairs and clean that brooder for the newbies hatching this week.

Yeah, I figure I'll check each one carefully before giving up.

Yeah, I'll take the jap babies

I like the japs.

Hope the wing goes back - like I said, that one baby I thought wasn't gonna ever get her feet under her, but this morning she was walking to the food with everyone else. Maybe she's just lazy
lau.gif
She was the second chick born (on saturday), and she was still laying around with her legs out behind her yesterday.

The first chick born was all alone for a whole day, so I spent a lot of time talking to it and playing with it. It must think I'm Mama, now, because every time I go in it runs to the edge of the brooder and cheeps at me. It is a little naughty, too
lau.gif
it picks at the others sometimes, and I'll wag my finger at her, and she'll follow my finger likes it's food
gig.gif
if I trail my finger on the pad in the bottom, she'll follow it around, too. She's so funny.

Yeah, that one and the two red ones were the only ones that fluffed up on their own. They all three have pretty long fluff on them.

I love her color (and the other cochin like her) I just don't know what to call the color

I'll have to go back to the pics of the parent birds to see if they resemble any of them and see how they'll turn out when they get their feathers in.
