Ok, if I listen with my ear to the incubator I can hear peeping - I cannot tell which one it is, without opening it, and I cannot see one which has pipped the shell. I hope I get more babies, two is nice, but out of 13 eggs, I'd like to have more than that.

I heard back from the lady, and we are filing a claim with fedex - she is supposed to initiate the claim, because it was ground service, so as soon as she calls them they will come out and inspect the package for me. I may be able to get at least part of my money back.

Hope something good comes of it.

Oh that really sucks about the nativity!! People try to do it so the shipping isn't so much. I would rather pay a bit extra to make sure it arrived in good condition.
Do you have shavings in your brooders? I do, and I have noticed if the shavings get wet, they really start stinking. I have put pie pans under my waterers so they can't spill it everywhere.
I cleaned my quails' tank, the one with one A&M and the one button in it? It had maggots in it

Those nasty birds keep spilling their food and water, and I guess it was just perfect conditions for the nasty little suckers! You would think the quail would have eaten them!! I got to do brooder cleanings today as well. The 3 chicks in the bedroom were stinking big time. And the quail tank. The baby buttons aren't too bad, but I'll have to change their shavings before long. I cleaned out the wet stuff from their water, and got a lot of poopies out, so they should be good for a little while.
Are you going to Sano tonight? I might try to talk dad into it, just for the heck of it. My luck there would be a pair of something I've been looking for, and I don't have any money!


FrChuckW~~ I take it you didn't see my coop design?

The one I have planned has 14 different breeder/brooder/quail cages, and 8 different runs circling the building! So I'm thinking making two buildings with a shared run wouldn't work! If I didn't have so many different breeds, either already here or coming this spring, it would probably work!

funny thing is, they can't understand why they can see the water in the glass jar but it can't come out at them, they keep pecking at the glass.

Yeah, the wood shavings are really nasty - and I do have them in the brooders. I had hay in there, and it wasn't so bad, I need to grab more hay out fo the barn toput in there.

I would have it just straight puppy pads, but Chickaboom and BC scratch that all up, so it is shredded by the time I have turned around to walk out of the room.

I don't know for sure yet on sano - hubby is still in bed!! lazy butt. However, I dont know what time he actually came to bed, cause I got up when Sam came over this morning, and there was still some coals burning in the woodstove, so I am assuming he came to bed maybe around 4 AM.

Microwave beeped, lunch is done, beback in a bit.

4 am??? OMG! What the heck does he do all night? I know there weren't any good movies on last night, unless you guys get the movie channels (starz and such).

With the way my babies are 'penned' I had to put a pint jar on it. The big plastic things, or a quart jar, wouldn't even fit in it!

I might need to get some of those puppy pads to put in the chicks' box. They are in cardboard atm, and if it gets wet it really stinks!! I have a pie pan under the waterer, so it's ok for now, but those would be nice, just to be safe. I wonder if you (or I) could put some baking soda or something in there to help with the stink? They'd probably eat it!

The puppy pads at walmart - for 50 of them I paid 13.50 or so, but you can get smaller packages for like 8 bucks. They are about 22x23 but don't cut them to fit - fold them

I learned the hard way not to cut them, the fluffy stuff inside all comes out like it is snowing in there.

The Man Who Saved Christmas is on !! I love that movie, of course, I like A.C. Gilbert, anyway - hubby collects some of his toys, and the kids have always loved that type of thing.

invented Erector Sets, and science kits, and lead pouring kits, and all sorts of stuff that today's market would outlaw for kids (OMG we must keep them safe from themselves!!). But the kids loved them back then.

Hubby has three of his steam engines (toy steam engines, you can run stuff with them, they are cool - like miniatures of a real steam engine).

My boys had erector sets they played with til they got old enough not to. I'm glad at least THOSE are coming back into fashion.

Anyway, during the War (can't recall if it was WW1 or WW2) the President decided to cancel Christmas. A.C. Gilbert went to Washington and lobbied to have it reinstated. He argued that if there was no happiness, no Christmas, no joyful family celebrations then there was no reason to fight the war in the first place.

He was one cool dude

Oh, btw - hubby has a ton of War dvd's (some movies, a lot of documentaries etc...) he watches. He does it at night, cause that is when he can get peace and quiet to watch

and he doesn't have to bore me with them. I like some of them, just not dvd after dvd after dvd

so how long after they pip the membrane/air sack but not pip the shell can they breathe? Not a pipped shell in there, but I know I heard peeping earlier, now I don't but they might be sleeping.

It depends. I beleive I have read it can take 24-48 hours. The lack of oxygen is what makes them pip. It causes convulsion-like twitches, which makes the chick pip. This also is what causes them to zip the shell.
